There is a book out in which a number of children were interviewed.  Not sure whether he was one of them.  Possibly it is available from your library.  Have you looked into the records of the courts i.e. Old Bailey?  Some of the children were sent out as a result of a court sentence.

"The Children's Friend Society - Juvenile Emigrants to Western Australia, South Africa and Canada 1834 - 1842 by Geoff Blackburn. This book can be obtained from Access Press, P.O. Box 132, Northbridge, Western Australia."

Yes thanks - I've looked at various books and documents at the British Library - I live in London; unfortunately he wasn't one of the children interviewed.  I'll try criminal records; some were orphans or from very poor families.

The will seems to have been filed in 1870 and he died 1912 with it finally being wound up in 1913.  Not sure if this is your John.

Hi - This is is brilliant - the 1870 one could well be the John Anley I am looking for - son John James Anley did die in 1912 - I have that death record but not the record for liquidation and distributation 1913.  I got the death record through Ancestor za as it was listed on their website.  Any suggestions for getting copies of the other 2 records?  Do you know of a researcher in Cape Town?

Thanks very much for finding this for me.

You can order the estate file directly from the National Archives in Cape Town.  If you send me a PM I will forward the required forms as well as their contact details.
