Staying on Jaynes – James Cowan line, I thought I had found the marriage on Familysearch.org which has a marriage in Newry for 1875 but that is for a James Cowan m Harriet Boynes, BUT I did not succeed in getting the reverse ie a Harriet Boynes m James Cowan. I think the familysearch searchengine only hunted for Cowan The familysearch.org references are
Volume Number 11
Page Number 937
GS Film number 101252
Digital Folder Number 004179385
Using a similar site
www.emeraldancestors.com I discovered that that James was marrying a Mary.............. The website has no Boynes, but does have some Boyne
So unless you can did other James Cowans on familysearch it’s a brickwall down that one.
In Griffiths valuation homesteads in 1864 in Newry civil parish Co Down included
Cowan Robert Drumcashellone
Cowan Maria Croreagh
Cowan Robert Saval More
Cowan William Benagh
Cowan William Croreagh
Cowan Margaret Lindsay's Hill,in Newry itself
Cowan Joseph Postley Place,in Newry itself
Cowan Isaac Desert
Cowan John Benagh
Cowan John Finnard
Cowan Joseph Benagh
Cowan Agnes Finnard
I know I have already listed these before BUT one or more above should be James parents with luck, James would be 18 and already learning his later blacksmithing or similar, probably learning such a skill in Newry itself or a farm.
In 1861 street directory,
http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk there are three Blacksmiths as such listed
Connolly, Thomas, blacksmith, 9 Canal Street.
Mooney, John, blacksmith, 97 Hill Street.
McClelland, Robert, blacksmith, Hill Street.
There would be a whitesmiths and horse establishments and farms are notlisted or
In the 1852 street directory t
http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk here is
Cowan, James, grocer and spirit merchant, 39 Water Street
James children got baptized in a variety of churches in Liverpool / Birkenhead are the oldest was in a Church of England church. If either of the parents were a church of Ireland spouse they might be recorded in Ros davies churches eg
St. Patrick's Church of Ireland in Church Street , Newry. Her entry reads Baptisms 1847- 1926; burials 1862- 1919 at PRONI Mic/1/120 & Dublin 2034; marriages 1784-1963; Graveyard attached, gravestones UHF Vol 21; email me Ros for a gravestone look-up So that is one year too late if 1846 is accurate for his baptism but ok for his marriage possibility.
St. Mary's Church of Ireland in Needham Place (now called John Mitchell Place ) , in the centre of Newry
Records available; Baptisms 1804-1814; 1817; 1819 & 1822-1894; marriages 1784- 1963; burials 1824- 1876; index of baptisms , amrriages & burials 1784- c. 1910; vestry minutes 1775-1948; select vestry minutes 1877- 1909; registers of vestrymen 1870- 1935; preacher's books 1878- 1957; registers of pews occupied 1886- 1926 & subscribers 1886- 1959;No graveyard; but the memorial inscriptions inside the church are in UHF Vol 21; email me Ros davies for a memorial look-up; burials at the old St. Patrick's Church of Ireland on the hill. LDS have on FHL British Film #259218 parish registers 1784-1901
So a James Cowan search here might be useful for both.
There is a
http://www.one-name.org/profiles/boyns which doesn’t cover the irish locations but the author might help you in anything she has found, her spelling variations include Boyen, Bowen, Bosswen, Boyens, Boynes Boyns
So just checking all Boyens/Boyne/Boynes/Boyns only Dublin in Griffiths Valuation in 1849 see
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation , the only one I could find find was a Anne Boyne living in Pelletstown, Castlenock North Dublin. So it is a very rare name in any these spellings, which the producers of the work standardized in many cases, I think if you go wider eg Bowen, you open the floodgates there are some 900 entries .
So that’s as far as I can go
Please help Jayne onwards
