If you search the medal index cards at the National Archives then you get several hundred possibilities:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/search-results.asp?searchtype=browserefine&query=first_name%3dthomas%20|last_name%3dprice&first_date=19140101&last_date=19201231&catid=10&pagenumber=1&querytype=1&mediaarray=*

Ancestry has several whose papers have survived:

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?gl=39&rank=1&new=1&so=3&MSAV=0&msT=1&gss=ms_f-39&gsfn=Thomas+Edward+&gsln=Price&sbo=0

You will need either an Ancestry subscription to view those records or you could travel to the National Archives at Kew where they are available for free.

It's also well worth looking at this page:

http://www.1914-1918.net/

and follow the link for researching a soldier
Good hunting,

Hi Answers

There are some very knowledgeable folks who hang around in here and enjoying running a few searches to help folks like you who have a specific person to find but.....
It does help to try and narrow the search options down a bit by you providing more info e.g (not in any order) AND I do see you have added a little above.

Was your man married if Y what was his wifes name incl maiden name?
What was his dob, year even?
What was his occupation before and after serving?
Did he have children - they are some times listed on joining up papers?
Do you know if he survived and even if he received a pension?
Was he injured?
Do you have any address /village /town before or after WW1?
Do you have a photo you can scan in which may help get his regiment?
Got any info on any photos or docs which may help narrow the search?
Got any medals or even militaria items which you can describe?

Try to offer some of this will help greatly or if you would like to do it all yourself then again ,many people will offer guidance but so much of this searching is a process of elimination.
Hope this helps

Just had a quick look on CWGC = Common Wealth War Grave Commission - www.cwgc.org  and
there are 88 T. Price and 2 T E Price - so have a look and see if any could 'fit' him - assuming he did not survive?

This may be him?

1901 Wales census -Class: RG13; Piece: 4937; Folio: 123; Page: 3.
Address 8 Carpenters Yard, Tredegar
Thomas Price Born abt 1884 son of John and Sarah  in Tredegar, Monmouthshire, Wales. He was employed as a Coal hewer. His dad was B 1843 Hereford and his mum Sarah B 1844 Tedegar.

1901 Wales Census Class: RG13; Piece: 4937; Folio: 129; Page: 16
Address 6 Temple Street, tredegar
Thomas Price Born abt 1887 Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire, Wales son of Sarah Ann and Stepson to Sarah's husband John Roberts. The age is closer, this one was also a coal hewer.

I think you have to sort a bit more chaff from the wood and narrow the odds down so popular was his name there are too many for me to list. My advice is narrow the odds yourself to reduce the potentials then post again with more 'certain' info if by then you have not found him your self?

If you are not a member of the more well known web sites you can still pay as you view?
In Military there is a possibility for a Thomas who joined the army in 1902 - South Wales Boarder Regiment.
Mind you there are several other possibilities.

Is this the marriage record - have you used this to buy a marriage cert and thereby gain all the info that those documents can provide?

Name:     Sarah Winifred Davies
Year of Registration:    1908
Quarter of Registration:    Jul-Aug-Sep
District:    Bedwelty
County:    Monmouthshire
Volume:    11a
Page:    159

its a fair chance this is the sons birth registration?

Name:     Thomas Alfred Price
Year of Registration:    1909
Quarter of Registration:    Apr-May-Jun
District:    Bedwelty
County:    Monmouthshire
Volume:    11a
Page:    161

From this and the marriage cert you will get much more info and also see the occupation of Thomas Edward at least twice all of which will help narrow down your search options for WW1 service.

Most of the soldiers who served with the British Army in WW1 qualified for campaign medals:

An interesting man, with a very interesting medal index card.

A pre-war regular by the looks of it. He went overseas 20th Sept 1914 and was awarded 1914 Star. Also awarded British War and Victory medals.

Forfeited his entitlement due to Desertion 3/3/16, but had them restored. (Star was not restored until 1924)

Address: 78 Bradley Lane, Bradley, Huddersfield.

Correction, he was actually a Special Reservist.

His service record survives.

I dont know how you managed to find this information but thank you a hundred times your amazing ,this whole case is amazing with lots of unturned stones but due to some of them being in wales there are a few hickups.
Now I will try and get the records card you suggested but can you tell me any information about the regiment he was in ? You say he deserted? do you think i would have a chance of getting his army records? I can not put the story in print for all to read as i do not think it totally fair but if you are interested i will try and find out how to send it you via email which my help fit a few pieces into the jigsaw, he had a son born dec 1916 at that address and that is where we got the army information

Title: WW1IndexCards 'Piece Hampton D Holland E '
Post by: Kira on Wednesday 15 February 12 16:15 GMT (UK)
The National Archives state on the WW1 Medal Index Cards 'Piece Hampton D Holland E ' on many soldiers cards
Does anyone know what that means?
I emailed the NA and their answer...The detail you mention may be the range of names on the document....not very helpful to me
Thanks in advance!
Kira

the National Archives organise their [our] records in "pieces" - each piece has a reference code and a title. "Piece Hampton D to Holland E" is the title of that piece and it means it contains all of the records [medal cards in this instance] relating to men whose names in alphabetical order run from D. Hampton to E. Holland. If you are looking for David Hampton - his card would be in there - if you were looking for Albert Hampton it wouldn't - it would be in the piece immediately preceding.

Hope that helps,

jds1949

Many thanks for that jds1949. My brain was on a mind set of operations that perhaps had dealings within Europe during WW1. ;)
