Fennelly family from Kilkenny
« on: Friday 11 April 14 21:34 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone advice me on Irish research?

I have someone who was born in Long Benton Northumberland. The facts that I know of the family are that:-

1.  Her parents are William (1815) and Elizabeth Fennelly (1822)
2.  William and Elizabeth were born in Ireland.
3. Their eldest 2 children were Michael (b abt 1844) and Timothy (b abt 1846) and they were  both born in Ireland.
4. There next child was Edward and he was born in 1854 in Long Benton, Northumberland.
5. On the 1911 census Timothy states that he was born in Freshford, Kilkenny.

Now several online family trees have the additional information that William Fennelly was born in Ballylarkin in 1815......and that his wife was Elizabeth McCulloch.

Please can anyone confirm any of the Irish information? I am not too knowledgeable in Irish research and don't know where to look. I don't trust the online trees as I can see an error in the Northumberland side of their information.

It would just be great to confirm Elizabeth's maiden name and perhaps details of their marriage. If there is no way of finding online Irish parish records I know I could send for the birth certificate of one of the children born in Northumberland.

Oh yes, and I believe they were Roman Catholic.

Thank you for any advice. :)
Best wishes HL

The only source for records in the time frame you mention is baptism records.
www.rootsireland.ie (pay site) You will need to register & each record costs 5€
There are 2 records showing as follows:
Baptism for a Michael Finnelly in Co Kilkenny in 1843
Baptism for Timothy Fennelly in Co Kilkenny in 1845

Baptism for a William Fennelly Co Kilkenny 1818 (possible father of above 2)
If you purchase the above records hopefully for the child :)ren it will give mothers maiden name
In case of William it should show parents names.

www.nationalarchives.ie is showing a Patrick Fennelly in Monabrague townland in 1827 in Tithe Applotment books this is same area as Ballylarkin where you said William was born :)

Thank you ballydw, I'll look at all of those and hopefully it will all tie in nicely and confirm the mothers maiden name......also perhaps parents for William. Shame there is no marriage on there.

Thanks for your help  :)
Best wishes HL

Hi,
Did you find the information you were looking for, as I am researching the same people.
After following, incorrectly, other family tree's I have now researched and not taken other tree's as Gospel, Martha Fennelly (Finley) 1861- My Great Grandmother, and found she is the daughter of William Fennelly. This new information came to light when I obtained a copy of her marriage Certificate to William Bellamy 1881, Lambeth.

Hi Steve, yes I can confirm that the parents are William Fennelly and Elizabeth McCulloch.

Martha (1861) is one of their children.......I think there were 14 in total. I found quite a bit on www.rootsireland.ie ........didn't unfortunately find a marriage for them but the baptisms confirmed Elizabeth's maiden name.

Best wishes HL
