Help needed Irish McGowan's Crest
« on: Monday 23 April 12 13:35 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
Can some one help please?
Attached is my Gfather Mcgowan's crest as on his grave stone.
The family came from Co Antrim.
I am looking for the correct Coat of Arms for this crest.
The ones I have found have pigs head, an arm carrying a torch and others as crests.
Motto is Juncta Arma Decori
Excuse my terminology if not correct.
Cheers Will
McGowan: Maghera, Coleraine, Co Derry, Ireland.

The usual sources for this information -- Burke's General Armory and Fairbairn's Crests -- are not terribly helpful in this particular case.

Fairbairn's notes the motto Juncta Arma Decori as being used by M'Gouan and M'Gowan.

The crest of a talbot passant or collared azure Fairbairn notes as being used by M'Gowan, but the only geographic indicator is "Scotland."

The arms of M'Gouan of Scotland cited in Burke's is Argent, a lion rampant gules between two cinquefoils vert.

How helpful this is I cannot say.  Antrim is certainly not located in Scotland, but of course it is possible that the family originated in Scotland and moved to Ireland.

Hi All,
More help needed, please.
I down loaded Fairbairn's Crest Ebook with all the info I want, but The Ebook does not show the Plates.
So, does anyone have access to Fairnbairns Plate 54.5?
Thanks Will

Which edition of Fairbairn's do you need the plate from?  Different editions have different arrangements of the plates, and so Plate 54 from one edition may not match Plate 54 from another.  For example, I have digital versions of both the 1905 and the 1911 editions; In the double-picture below, plate 54 from the 1904 edition is on the left and plate 54 from the 1911 edition is on the right.

Assuming that you're looking for the talbot passant crest, I've also attached Plate 54.5 from the 1905 edition.

Hi David,
Thanks for the trouble, i appreciate your effort.
If I compare my Gfather's talbot with Fairbairn there seems to be a bit of artistic licence by my family.
Our talbot looks more like No 1 with right front foot pointing.
It is very difficult to see if No1 has a collar.
Cheers Will

Hi David,
More help please.
May I also have Fairnbairn's 1906 Plate 98.14.
This is our Tilsley motto where I think there has been more artistic licence.
Cheers Will

No. 1 does not have a collar.  But No. 5 from Fairbairn's is very unusual in having the left front leg raised; the overwhelming majority of beasts and monsters which are blazoned as "passant" have the left front leg elevated.  That makes your great-grandfather's talbot the expected version and the one in Fairbairn the anomaly.

You bet!  Here's nos. 13 and 14 (the only difference between them is the position of the pelican's wings) from Plate 98.
