He came to New Zealand and on his marriage certificate to Amy Doney Thomson here in New Zealand he has his birthplace as Dunbartonshire Scotland we think his parents are John and Rose Ann, any information would be welcome Peter Annan Ramsay

Trees on Anc list Hugh McTague who married Amy Doney Thomson as being born in 1893.

Scotlands People list only two Hugh McTague's as born 1891-1895  One in 1893 in Linlithgow West Lothian and the other in Muiavonside Stirling

I can't see either Hugh  in 1901 or a death for either pre 1901 but did find a family liviing in Linlithgow with parents John and Rose Ann as below. Could Hugh have been mistranscribed or just missed? I can't the family in Scotland in  1911

John Mctague 36 Rumford, Stirling Quarryman
Rose Ann Mctague 37 b Linlithgow
Catherine Mctague 6
John Mctague 11
James Mctague 1 Month
Living at High St Linlithgow

Hi Kay99, On my mothers birth cert she was born 19th March 1927 and has Hugh as being 34 that would mean he was born in 1893 Amy and Hugh divorced in about 1930 and they lost touch with him. He was a miner and we think he went to work in the coal mines in the north island in New Zealand as I read somewhere that's where they think he went.Hugh 1893 would most likely be the one . I am not sure when he came to New Zealand but Amy and Hugh were married 24th December 1923.Thanks Peter

If he died 1955 his age was 66 c 1889
(NZ BMD)

So you have his NZ Marriage and Death Certs?

Closest arrival I can find is;

H Mctague
New Zealand, Archives New Zealand, Passenger Lists, 1839-1973
birth: 1889
immigration: 18 September 1913 Wellington, New Zealand
Image has him as single/occp fireman, born Ireland (but pob has been dittoed from people above)

From Trish's mention of possible Irish links, there is this 1901 Irish census entry to consider: www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Desertmartin/Rosegarron/1532594/

What were the names of the early born children of Hugh and Amy? They may have followed some form of naming pattern that can provide further clues.

Have you or any other family researcher ordered his death cert from 1955? Below, from another post here on RootsChat, is what a death registration should include (as always, if this info is known to the informant):

First/given Name
Surname
Name if different from Above
Date of death
Place of Death
Cause of Death

Name of Certifying Doctor
Date last seen alive by certifying Doctor
Sex
Age and date of Birth
Place of Birth
If not born in NZ number of years lived here
Usual home address
Occupation
Date of Burial or Cremation Place of Burial or Cremation
Age of each daughter
age of each son

Father and Mother's First name
Mother Surname
given name at birth

Relationship Status at time of death
Age of Deceased at event
Place of Marriage/ civil union

Spouse/ Partner First given name
Surname family name
Age if living

Monica

PS: On a similar vein, has anyone viewed his marriage cert to Amy to see what shows? Peter Ramsay, who originally started this thread mentions that Dumbartonshire as a birth place was included on Hugh's marriage reg?

There is also another Hugh McTague entry, with a birth year also in 1889 here https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7073093

'Short Sevice Stokers' on the above link, could fit wth the fireman ref on the shipping manifest that Trish mentioned earlier.

I think this Hugh shows up on the Scottish 1911 census as:

Hugh MCTAGUE
1911
21
902/S 5/ 18
Shipping - Royal Navy

A maybe? 1901 family census entry in Donegal www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Tieveskeelta/Carrickataggart/1181057/  Ignore that. This Hugh looks to have died in the US in the 1950s.
