Amy Johnson, aviator 1930 photo
« on: Wednesday 08 October 14 13:11 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I found this rather scrappy photo when I was looking through an album belonging to my grandfather.  He was a London copper from about the mid-1920's.  The photo is in a dreadful state and I've scanned it as best I can.

I believe it shows Amy Johnson, the famous aviator, when she took part in a London street parade in July 1930.  Apparently close to a million people turned out onto the streets to see her so it was quite a big event of the time.  It's likely my grandfather was on duty on the streets at the time of the parade, hence why he kept the photo as a memento.

Can anyone confirm this is Amy Johnson?  Does anyone have a better copy of this photo or something similar from the parade.

Best regards,
Chris

Yes it most definitely is...I recently did a display of Amy and her aviation history at the Heritage Centre where I am  a volunteer.

Thanks Carol.

I found an article published in the 'Flight' journal dated 15th August 1930 which described the street parade.  It has another photo which shows a distant (rear) view of the car as she was passing through Trafalgar Square.  She was on her way to the Savoy Hotel where a luncheon was being held in her honour.  The article says the parade took place on the 6th August, not in July as suggested in my previous posting.

I think she was still Amy Johnson at the time of the parade.  Didn't she marry Jim Mollison in 1932?

Best regards,
Chris

Hi Chris...There is an article in the Daily Mail dated August 7th 1930 entitled "Amy Johnson's Day of Triumph in London" which has 3 pictures of her in FindmyPast newspapers.
