Dating a photograph of people who i don't know.
« on: Friday 24 October 14 15:46 BST (UK) »
I am trying to discover who this picture is of, one member of the family had it who has passed away, and they would only have photograph's for one line of the tree so was just wondering if you could all help me date this one.

It looks Edwardian, but I'm just not in the know enough to judge.

Many Thanks.

Around 1908-1910 depending on how fashionable the lady is.

Could we see the whole thing uncropped please including the outer edges of the mount, and also the back if there is anything printed on it.

Cheers,
China

I will try and get this sorted, i don't have direct access to it unfortunately. If it's the people who i think it is then the gentleman in the picture was rather well off. So i would expect her fashion to be up to date.

Just noticed the gent's collar...a little bit later around 1913/1914ish. The long collar was replaced by this more comfortable one just before the war.

What a lovely photo...I wonder if the medallion on the Albert chain would give any clues...it might be worth scanning just that part of the photo at a higher resolution.

Agree with China.
Both look very fashionable considering their age.
You'll notice his suit has narrow cut trousers with deep turn-ups. This was a style that became fashionable just before the war & remained so into the early 20's.
So a starting date of around 1910 & possibly into the war years, however this appears to have been taken in a seafront booth as they are close to the backdrop & there's no proper flooring so probably not later than 1914.

Thank you for all of your replies. I have just had an email to say it was printed on a postcard by J W Hardy Photgraphers in Cleethorpes.

I'm still at a loss as to who this couple is to be honest, as the person i thought the gentleman was had three wives. Two of them died in the 40s. One in 1890, one in 1905 and then his third wife died in 1949 aged 79/80.

So at the time this photograph seems to be from his third wife would have been about 40 or so, and that lady looks a lot older than 40.

Would we all say this is a photo of a married couple?
