Lotter and Chelsea Peno
« on: Tuesday 07 August 12 20:49 BST (UK) »
In the 1851 Census it has the following information:

Thomas Mckenzie, 59, Lotter And Chelsea Peno, b. Clyne, sutherlandshire
Catharine Mckenzie, wife
Address: Doll, Clyne Sutherland
Occupation:

What is a Lotter and Chelsea Peno?  Is this a Chelsea Pensioner?  If so, what is that?

Thank you.

The 1861 gives him as Pensioner Out Chelsea. This means that at one time he was a soldier There are two types of pensions "in pension" and "out pension". Most of these soldiers who received a pension did so as an "out pensioner " from the Chelsea Hospital.  You may be able to find his army records either on Find My Past or The National Archives.

I saw that as well, but the 1861 gives his DOB as 1793.

The 1841 Census gives his occupation as Army P (I am assuming private).  How is the best way to pull up service records?  I have tried Ancestry.com to no avail.

I tried that - but I wasn't able to pull up the records - what search terms did you use?

Thank you - from the time line (1808-1815) it looks as if Thomas McKenzie fought in the Battle of New Orleans
