William Barfoot a Tailor of Ampthill
« on: Monday 10 February 14 10:34 GMT (UK) »
Here is a challenge!
I wonder if anyone can find William Barfoot 1788 or his wife Martha 1795 (as Barfoot or her previous names of Balls or Wesley) after 1851 alone or with any of their children??

I am not certain of their deaths but the most suitable are;
Martha Barford born 1794 death reg 1876 Q3 Ampthill?? But she is not on 1861 or 1871 census?
William Barfoot born 1785 death reg 1868 Q1 Berkhampstead Herts (? Out of the area??) but I should have found him on the 1861 census??

William Barfoot was born 1788 in North Kilworth Leics, but was a Tailor in Ampthill and there are references to him trading there;
In 1839 ‘a Tailor of Dunstable Str. Ampthill.
In 1847 two references ‘a Linen and Woolen Draper at Dennels End. Flitwick, Ampthill and ‘a Tailor and Draper of East End. Flitwick’ and
In 1864 ‘a Tailor and Draper at East End. Flitwick‘.

William Barfoot’s son Richard born 1811 Millbrook was also a Tailor in Evershot, Maulden and Ampthill who died in Luton in 1884.
William Barfoot’s son John born 1822 Ampthill was also a Tailor and Draper in Ampthill from 1861
William Barfoot’s son William born 1828 was a Tailor in Luton from 1851 where he married and his children baptised and died in 1880.

After his first wife’s death William Barfoot married Martha Balls in 1846 at Flitwick.
Martha Balls a widow was born 1795 was named Martha Wesley at the Baptist Chapel in Boston Lincs. Martha was the widow of John Balls they married 21 Jan 1817 at Flitwick and had 7 children baptised there 1822-1837. Joseph 1822, Eleanor 1825, Charlotte 1829, William 1831, Hannah 1833, Mary 1835, James 1837.
Martha Wesley born 18 Feb 1795 d of Henry and Eleanor reg at High Street Baptist Boston Lincs

The last time I have found William and Martha Barfoot in on the 1851 census when they were both lodgers of Martha’s son Joseph BALLS born 1823 Flitwick a widow and dealer in Plait and his children plus lodgers William Balls 1830 and James Balls 1837 both Flitwick (who were also Martha sons) living Dennel End Flitwick. In 1841 Martha Balls  a widow was with her children in Dennel End, Flitwick

The only other ‘evidence’ I have is
"Reference BMB4/1/5/28 Title Notebook containing inventory of stock in trade of grocery and drapery at Wilstead. William Barfoot. Date Free Text 15 Aug 1879.
(I have not found either William or his son William in Wilstead although I believe there were earlier Barefoots there. Which William does this was this refer to unlikely to be William 1789 his son died in 1880 but in Luton.)

Milliepede. Thank you for your help but mine were definitely Tailors so I do not think that is them.

Two of William Barfoots sons were 'Journeyman Tailors' which is I think why they moved around. One son who lived in Ampthill was delivering a pair of trousers to Chatham in Kent in 1833 when he was attacked. Amazing the distances they covered!!

The only sibling for William I have ia a sister Ann who married James Cooper in 1816 at North Kilworth but in 1861 Ann is a widow living in Brinklow, Warks. her brother William was not with her.

We will have to keep digging.

Didn't really think it was right but had to put it down  :)

Attacked for delivering a pair of strides times really were tough back then  :o

As I'm sure you've done checked the Balls children from 1851 and neither of them seem to be with them later on.  Puzzler.

Hi Keyboard
Yes, that is the last sight in 1851 I have for William and Martha with Martha's sons.
What I would love is either a burial for them or to see either William or Martha on the 1861 census.
I checked the address in 1861 and they are not there!!

I've been concentrating on the name Martha as the surname can be misconstrued then wondered if Martha had been misconstrued also!

Found a Mary Bayfert - bear with me - born 1795 Boston mother in law age 76.
1871 census Herts.
Household is Samuel Barker 34 born Ampthill
Mary Barker (Bayfert) 35 born Flitwick
John Barker 3
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Milliepede. That looks very interesting!!!!! Thank you!!

Martha Balls had a daughter Mary baptised 1835 in Flitwick. I need to look for a marriage for her to Barker,
Also the death registered for William Barfoot born 1785 death reg 1868 Q1 Berkhampstead Herts, now looks possible.

But where the heck were Martha and William in 1861???

Aha going back from Samuel Barker to 1861 we have in Millbrook Bedfordshire

Samuel Barker 24 born Millbrook
Mary Barker 25 born Flitwick
William Barfoot 24 tailor born Littleworth Bucks
Martha Barfoot 25 born Ampthill

Oh. I was hoping the ages were wrong.  Just says lodgers for William & Martha not father in law or mother in law  :-\
