Hi Homers , welcome to RootsChat  :)

There are a few children baptised at Annan to parents with those names in the 1840's.
Is that the correct family ?
Can you tell us what you have already ?

Hi and welcome

An interesting family on the 1851:

Whinnyrigg Tile Works, Annan

James Currie, 42, Tile burner, b. Ochiltree, Ayrshire
Jane, w , 36, b. Dailly, Ayrshire
William, s, 16, b.Kilmarnock
Jane, d, 12, b. do
Robert, s, 10, b. do
Adam, s, 8, b. Mauchline, Ayrshire
Charles, s, 6, b. Annan
Janet, d, 3, b. do
Margaret, d, 3 mths, b. do

Children down to Charles are listed as tile makers!

This fits with marriage/banns in Kilmarnock and Dailly (20 and 24 May 1831) for James Currie and Jane Sloan.

This could be the family. Some of my D & G ancestors married into Ayrshire families.

Added - I think the last 3 children might well be the ones that ev has found.

Hi ev,

Thanks for your reply. Not sure where to start, so here goes.....

G Grandmother - Agnes Irving Currie B:21 May 1882, Glasgow, and according to my fathers         B Cert. she was 23 when my father born in N.Z., (hence unable to find on Scottish census).   Agnes died in N.Z.1948.
GG Grandfather Charles Currie B:1844 died N.Z. 1911, Wife Jane, GG Grandmother B:1851 died N.Z.1902. From other Family I understand they married 1st January 1875, Kirkpatrick Fleming.
Charles' parents - James Currie/Jane Sloan.
Jane's parents - Francis Irving/Agnes Irving (Clark), according to Jane's Death Cert., and shows Francis as having been born and married in Kirkpatrick, having resided in N.Z. for 15 years (in1902) when Jane died. According to the death cert. 6 living children, 3 male & 3 female. Their son Frank Currie is buried with them in N.Z.

Hi Gadget, thanks for the welcome..

I find this all a little daunting as my father never discussed his family at all and it would appear nor did his siblings talk to their families, so we are a little lost. If you see the post to "ev" you may pick up on something...here's hoping we can fill in some of the gaps. There are no surviving children of Charles and Jane Currie so as you can see we do face a few problems. However we will plug on and with a little help we may reach some conclusions... Here's hoping.

Thanks all.

Hi again  :)

It does look as if the 1851 family is yours!  Here they are in 1841:

Glaisnock Smithy, Old Cumnock, Ayrshire

James Currey, 25, tile maker
Jane, 25
James, 5
William, 3
Thomas, 6 mths
All born Ayrshire

On the 1841 those of 15 and over were grouped into 5 year age bands, so 25 would be anyone between 25 and 29.

I've not found suitable baptisms for James and Jane so far but will have another look. I have the Monumental inscriptions for parts of Ayshire and will look there also.

The banns of 1831 that I referred to (Kilmarnock and Dailly (20 and 24 May 1831) for James Currie and Jane Sloan.) might also give some clues - I'll see what I can find

Some more

I've found the death of Jane Currie, m.s. Sloan ~

Hutchesontown, Glasgow, 29 Nov 1880
Jane Currie, widow of James Currie, contractor. Aged 60.
Parents - William Sloan, farm servant and Jane M.S. McKinna.  Both deceased.
Cause of death - Gastritis and Peritonitis, cert. by W Forrest, surgeon.
Informant - Margaret McGibbon, daughter (present)

Added - I wouldn't worry too much about Jane's age on death cert - Margaret probably just made an estimate!
