John Cunningham Belfast Plasterer
« on: Saturday 05 July 14 09:28 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me move forward - or back?
I have a John Cunningham a 'plasterer' present at the marriage of his son Robert Cunningham to Agnes Robinson at May Street Presbyterian Church 18th November 1854. How can I go about finding more about this John Cunningham?
Many thanks in advance!
Steve in Brisbane Australia.

Steve,
         The family search site- https://familysearch.org/search/collection/results?count=20&query=%2Bfather_givenname%3Arobert~%20%2Bfather_surname%3Acunningham~%20%2Bmother_givenname%3Aagnes~%20%2Bmother_surname%3Arobinson~&collection_id=1584963

Gives two children for this couple, Robert born 26 Aug 1866 and Eliza born 26 Aug 1870. There were probably more as civil registration of births did not start until 1864 in Ireland.

I can't work out the relations I started earlier ie

1819 in Belfast  with John Cunningham, Plasterer 6 Burch Street or Birch Street, off Little Donegall Street.see http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/1819_Alphanames.htm NOTES its off Donegall Street Little, off 19 John Street to Carrick Hill.

large gap in years

1843 Cunningham, James, Stucco Plasterer, Charlotte Street, off Donegall Pass

Speculation A plasterer might have had storage premises that ended up by 1843 known as Cunningham's Court, Mustard Street which is off Johns Street

There are several John or James Cunningham possible relatives listed in http://www.cliftonstreetcemetery.com {Thanks Glenravel}  In the registry alone a few samples
1831 February 22 John aged 4 son of the late James Cunningham, Long Lane
1834 June 15  Mrs Jane Cunningham Aged 46
Wife of James Cunningham Shankhill From and born at Templepatrick
1834October 6  Cunningham
1845John Cunningham (Aged 4 Days)Son of John Cunningham
1853 April 5  James Cunningham Aged 68
1859 April 23 Ruth Cunningham Aged 76 Widow of the late James Cunningham Tomb St. Notes Tomb st is off Lime Kiln Dock. Speculation I think lime is part of plastering. This cemetery is worth doing extra carefully all parts not just finishing the registry.

Thats all I can do Good luck onwards JimG
PS a large gap in children could be the couple both have resus negative blood groups apparently

Many thanks JimG and  kingskerswell! You have both opened up many avenues! The Clifton Street cemetery is a real find and I suspect a must for anyone doing Belfast research. I have found some possible records in the Belfast City Council cemetery records as well.

Are you aware of any other sources of records before 1864?? Were any burials in church graveyards or were they all in big cemeteries - the few church yards I have seen are very small and probably could not hold many graves??

I also have an elusive Lowry Cunningham who I think was John's son - again an unusual name that I cannot trace? Any assistance appreciated.

Cheers
Steve

Steve,
I can find a marriage for a Lowry Cunningham. It took place on 5 Sept 1872 in Banbridge Methodist Church. The bride was Jane Grey and the fathers' names were John Cunningham and Alexander Grey.

Hi Steve the spud champ, you may not need the following after Kingskerswell offer of the marriage but read on please
Hi you mention the smaller graveyards importance, consider  UHF’s statement about their History from Headstones Online project   “’ There are over 1,200 burial grounds in Northern Ireland”.... “ Our searchable graveyard database contains over 50,000 inscriptions from around 800 graveyards in counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Londonderry, Fermanagh and Tyrone.”

Narrow that down to the more heavily populated counties, and finally look at a the possible County Down graveyards on website History from Tombstones, then see a list of 21 volumes published in A4 format say with an average of 20 pages, each page containing say 20 transcriptions, that could be 10 k inscriptions you don’t know about     pub’ by or connected to the Ulster Historical Foundation  which were edited by  Richard R S Clarke, and using a list of the published volume numbers as found in library catalogues and Amazon books and Abe books etc and similiar just abstract the denomination and parish name from the detailed contents page for each pub’.

I have some errors within  vol 14/15.  I am also aware that microfiches exist but don’t know if available from others eg familysearch.com etc or only UHF ie ancestryireland.   I remember some of the original volumes included a name index covering a five volumes sequence.

My list just of the graveyard names is too big for Rootschat to allow if divided into two, imagine the potential

Now before I go, consider Ros Davies website based in Australia, not a educational charity
whose completely free website even offers a free look up for some graveyards see under churches uphttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/
ie couldn’t the UHF gives more detail for the general public free, see they acquired R Clarkes imput

The list is laid out  Section A. Someones law says tough luck! it’s the worst example I can offer,  but can you see how much we can miss.

Many thanks for info on Lowry BallyaltikilliganG

JimG your graveyard info is invaluable! However the Family CEO has gently suggested to me that I should spend more time looking after the living than chasing the dead!! 50,000 names is a lot to consider!!

Sincere thanks to you both again.
Steve
