Evan Watkin & Cecil Help
« on: Sunday 29 January 12 15:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi there. I have come across a baptism transcript on free reg belonging to my gx4 grandfather Evan Watkin. It states he was baptised on the 9th of June 1816 at St Crallo, Coychurch.

Parents are stated as Evan Watkin (carpenter) and Cecil, and are living at Pencoed.

Cecil went on to marry Lewis Morgan in 1826 in Llanharan and to John Griffiths in 1844 in Peterston. From these I have gathered that Cecil or Cecilia was a Davies before her marriage and her father was Jenkin Davies, and she was born about 1791 at Coychurch.

I have not been able to find any marriage between Evan Watkin and Cecil Davies, or any mention of their baptism/christening. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Joshua.

there's a likely marriage for Evan Watkin & Ceicel David 14-1-1815 at Llangan (I think).

Cornwall: Allen, Bevan, Bosisto, Carnpezzack, Donithorn, Huddy, James, Retallack, Russell, Vincent, Yeoman
Cards: Thomas (Llanbadarn Fawr)
Glam: Bowler, Cram, Galloway, James, Thomas, Watkins
Lincs: Coupland, Cram
Mon: Cram, Gwyn, John, Philpot, Smart, Watkins
Pembs: Edwards (St. Dogmael's)
Yorks: Airey, Bowler, Elliott, Hare, Hewitt, Kellett, Kemp, Stephenson, Tebb

Hi, where is Llangan in relation to coychurch? The date seems to fit in, but on her 3rd marriage to John Griffiths, her father is put as Jenkin Davies. Do you think the surnames could have been transcribed incorrectly ?

surnames were not settled at that time, the final 's' still comes & goes. I've seen some names differ on  1841, 1851 & 1861 census entries. David & Davies are variations, not different names.

There's a useful map of parishes on Genuki
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Llangan/index.html shows it to be less than 2 miles from Coychurch

Oh right, thanks for that osprey! Cleared it up in my mind anyway, ah right so it is pretty close then. I'll have to bear that in mind about the Davies and David variation too. In that case, it does make it likely that this is the marriage that I could be looking for!

Try Freereg, www.freereg.org.uk

There is a ANN  Christened 03 Dec 1776, St Crallo, Coychurch, Glamorgan to JENKIN/MARY David

There is also a JENKIN/JANE having Children also.

This might tie it up;
JENKIN David 18 Jan 1756, St Crallo, Coychurch to ROWLAND/CECIL
+ a Jenkin David 09 Nov 1760 to Rowland/CICIL (1st may have died)

Burial of a Rowland DAVID 18 Jan 1782, no age given
+ a CICIL David 29 January 1782, no age given.

Trish :)

When searching make sure you click on Coychurch (one word) as Coy Church does not access the records I quoted.

There is a Burial of a Evan WATKIN, 04 August 1816, St catwyg, Pentyrch, Glamorgan, Age 26, so birth c 1791

Another at Llangeinor Parish Church, 02 Dec 1815, Age 28

So either way Cecil was pregnant or just gave Birth when Evan died, if these are possibly him.

Thanks! I'll check out all that information now. I've been searching for a will for Jenkin David and I've managed to find it. 1841 in Pencoed, which mentions both Cecil and her son Evan Watkin (being the grandson of Jenkin) so the variation David fits in nicely here.

Plus it mentions other children of Jenkin - Elizabeth (morgan), Richard, William, Jane (leyshon) and Ann (john). There's no wife mentioned so it is safe to say that she had already passed away by this time.

Llangeinor would be more likely than Pentyrch, nearer to the parishes mentioned than Pentyrch.
