Innkeeper Charles COID of Penninghame.
« on: Tuesday 02 December 14 20:11 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the death records for Charles bc 1786 Sorbie and his wife Barbara (Dinnel aka Donald) bc 1784 Kirkinner. They appear in the 1861 census aged 75 and 77 respectively, but not in the 1871 census, suggesting they have both died by then.

ScotlandsPeople has one death, an older Charles Coid who was a Mochrum Weaver. Does anyone have any information about their demise?

Further question; does anyone know the name of the inn they might have occupied in Wigtown Row, now Queen's Street, Newton Stewart? I found Charles mentioned in several Trade directories in Wigtown Library earlier in the year, but no name.

Any advice or steer would be much appreciated.

Michael.

Would this Will & Testament entry be connected to them (a son for example)?

Is the Charles you mention, who is older? www.maxwellancestry.com/census/51transcript.aspx?houseid=89204054

One more  :)

On Scotlands People there is a hit for a Charles Coid at Mochrum with an unrecorded age in 1862.

Hi Monica,

Thanks again for your interest.

I had already discarded John because of his mother's name Elizabeth, not Barbara  and also I am not (yet) aware of any male issue of Charles and Barbara. I am descended from their daughter Grace.

The Mochrum Charles from memory was about 10 years older than my innkeeper. He also had a long lived spouse so ruling him out. (Addendum: sorry I hadn't looked at the link in your post. It is referring to the other older Charles and not the one I am researching). :(

Barbara is a fairly uncommon name for those times and I thought that might have helped pin her down.

Michael.

Hi Looby,

Thanks for your interest.

I had previous downloaded the Mochrum Charles death. He died in 1862 age 83, a  pauper woollen weaver as mentioned earlier The death was registered by his granddaughter Elizabeth Ann Nibblock. The only other Charles I found was a 2 years old who died in Kirkinner.  :-[

I am surprised that the deaths of Charles and Barbara were not reported in the Wig Free Press.

Michael.

It is odd that neither death seems to be on Scotlands People - it was compulsory to register deaths since 1855.
I wonder if the name has been spelt differently on deaths. Or could it be they did not die in Scotland?

Death notices in the newspapers might have cost  a fair bit of money. Perhaps the family couldn't afford to submit.
