Marriage Christopher/Alexander Parkinson
« on: Monday 26 March 12 22:36 BST (UK) »
hi does anyone have access to the parish records in Thurso. Im looking for a marrige of the above to a lady called jane not sure of her surname. From Censuses in 1841 they had a daughter around 1816 Mary Ann. however FS doesnt show this. The marriage will probably be around that time

There is this marriage showing on IGI:

Christopher ODDIE PARKINSON and Jane STEVEN (father Alexander Steven), marriage or banns on 9 May 1814 in Canongate, Edinburgh.

Is there a question mark on first name (Christopher/Alexander)? Can't easily see any marriage with Alexander for first name.

There is also this IGI marriage later:

Mary Ann PARKINSON - father Christopher Parkinson - married a Patrick Wood SMART, 22 October 1834 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh.

Looks promising, except this is all in the Ediburgh area and you are looking at Thurso  :-\

Still can't get a Thurso reference from the 1841 census.

This entry for 1841 for I think the Mary Ann not long married to Patrick:

Patrick Smart 30, baker
Marrianne Smart 25 b. Midlothian
Jessie Smart 5
Andrew Smart 4

Address: Canongate, Edinburgh

Can't easily see a Christopher or Jane in 1841, but this is an Alexander (50, warehouseman b. England) and wife Janet and children in Edinburgh for that year. One of the children is a 9 year old Christopher so perhaps a connection between Alexander and older Christopher (who married a Jane Steven).

Thank you for your help. Just assumed in may have been Thurso as the first child Mary Ann was born there. I think Jane was from the Caithness area. On censuses Alexander is also Christopher hence the confusion in 1851. Maybe it was a mistake by the census taker?

Mmmn...not sure what you mean.

What census details do you have? Who are you following? Can't easily see any Parkinsons in the Caithness area for 1841. What entry do you have for 1851?

Is this your Mary Ann in 1851 (from the entry we had earlier from a marriage to Patrick Smart):

Patrick W Smart 42 Baker Journeyman b. Leith
Marrianne Smart 36 b. Strians, Caithness
Christopher Smart 11
Patrick W Smart   6
Mary Jame Smart 2

Address: High St, Musselburgh, Inveresk Midlothian

If this is the line you are following, I think Christopher and Alexander are two different people - maybe related but not the same father for Mary Ann Parkinson. From her OPR marriage entry, Mary Ann's father showed as Christopher. Have you found Mary Ann Smart/Parkinson's death cert if she died in Scotland post 1855?

HI, davemchol, I have also looked to find this family in 1841 to enable me to track back and help you.  Please can you tell Monica and I and any other Rootschatters who maybe looking to help the following please?
1. Which town/city and parish  on the 1841 census did you find Mary Ann Parkinson and who else is recorded in the same family, please give us the ages and whether they are recorded as born in county or not as recorded on this census?
2.  Why do you think that Christopher married in Thurso?
This would help us all to do our best to locate the marriage of Christopher and ? Jane to assist you in your search.
Regards
Kathb

According to FreeCen Alexander Parkinson job Warehouseman aged 50
has a son of the same name aged 20 job guilder

1851 under Christopher Parkinson aged 60 labourer
son Christopher aged 19 Guilder however all the other childrens names and ages sort of match up
Alexander has moved out by this time mrried in Liverpool.

According to FS site Mary Ann married in 1834 to a Smart. Her name in 1841 Census is Marrianne Smart born Midolothian. however in 1851 again under marrianne it says born in Thurso Caithness with a patrick W Smart

Are you following a child of Alexander or Christopher? Mary Ann Smart/Parkinson died in 1878 in Musselburgh - her death cert can be viewed online on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. Death certs in Scotland include details on father and mother's full names (if known to the informant).
