I know this says completed but I couldn't see that anyone had replied to your original request for a newspaper report.  There is one in Glasgow Herald 18 January 1897:

Dumbarton – Fatal Result of an Accident – On Wednesday last a little girl named Sarah M’Curley was found on the railway near Dumbarton station injured, but on being medically attended she was able to walk home.  Her case assumed a serious aspect however, and on Saturday she succumbed to her injuries.

Hope this helps
Joyce

That's a great find Joyce  :) Poor, poor child walking off home after the accident with a fractured skull  :'(

Snooki, now that Joyce has found the entry which is always the hard part, you can view the original image for free here http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC

You cannot search by key word on this google news archive, so having dates to search by (and a lot of patience  ::)) is essential.

There are no editions online for that timepoint - that's why I transcribed the version I found rather than posting a google link  ;)

I'm aware that there's 2 railway stations in dumbarton now (east and central) .

does anyone know how many there was in 1897
(one or two)?

also if High st 1897 is in the same place as it is now ?

Does anyone know how many railway stations in dumbarton 1897 ?

Sarah was struck by part of a passenger train at the (looks like 'west end') of dumbarton railway.

also if High St is in the same place now as it was 1897.

Snooki, you need a map nearer to the late 1890s. The lastest one for Dumbarton in the NLS collection looks to be 1859 http://maps.nls.uk/towns/index.html

Can't help sorry regarding the stations: Dumbarton East Railway Station and Dumbarton Central Station. Some bits here

http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/87969/details/dumbarton+station+road+central+station/
http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/87521/details/dumbarton+glasgow+road+east+station/

You need local/railway knowledge, on which I fail on both counts  :P
