Hi John Irwin, I believe that there is a link between the above named Irwins and the McGill/ McCorriston families
only because they appear as sponsors  who were generally family cousins  etc Gerald
if you think there might be I would be delighted to compare notes

Hi Edenreaghbeg.
You may have some connections to John Irwin but I don't think my Irwin's would have been in a position to sponser anyone, if it meant the same thing then that sponsor means now.

Oh Sorry belfast beau  What I meant was that they were God parents to my Great Grandparents children when they were christened and not sponsors financially as in todays meaning

kingskerswell,

many many thanks for providing that information, please accept my apologies for not posting sooner.

I do believe that you are 100% spot on with that family listing! They are my ancestors, and Elizabeth Irwin is my great grandmother, and William is my great grandfather through marriage (though I am thinking he is probably the brother or relation of Elizabeth's dead 1st husband? jumping to conclusions here)

I am still in the very early stages of researching my Irish family links - and was mostly concentrating on the Scottish- but now I have just discovered that my grandmother, (Catherine McDonald, who married Thomas Charles Irwin)  - her father, James McDonald & mother, Matilda Gallacher, both emigrated from Ireland too  ??? ! So that will be a seperate posting soon  :)

Edenreaghbeg I will definately be in touch soon to see if there are links - or I can just send you the information that I have?

thanks again!
John Irwin
Irwin:-

McDonald:-McGuire
Gallacher:- Lynch
