Where are they?
« on: Thursday 07 August 14 19:53 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage entry in a parish register. But cannot find either parties' birth. I have tried all permutations of their names, and widened the field to all of Wales, but nothing comes up on IGI, parish registers, Ancestry or FindMyPast. Could someone with more knowledge than I come up with a possible answer.
Roberts, Caernarfon. Thomas, Caernarfon. Kite, Kent.

Maybe not born in Wales. But as Craclyn says -- what are they called and when was the marriage please?

What does the marriage record actually say? If it is just Harry Roberts and Mary Jones were married; you are probably stuck at an insurmountable brick wall; if there is any additional information there may be a smidgeon of light.

Have a look at all the couple's children's names. Often the eldest son and daughter are named after the paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother.

I assume you have considered that Harry may have been a nickname for Henry.

Check Genuki to see if church records exist for that parish for that period -- and where they are kept.

If still no joy work around that parish in concentric circles to check if neighbouring records exist.

Check the records held by the local county archives.

That's all I can think of for the moment.

Hi Pennines,

Done all that and still no luck. Can make a link via patronymics, but that is only guesswork.

Henry was never a nickname for Harry. Hari/Harry was the Welsh name anglicised into Henry by clergy who were by and large English.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I never knew that about Henry/Harry. I had always assumed that Harry was a nickname for Henry and for Harold.  (And as we know - we should never assume -- but I am always doing it!)

How interesting -- thank you for that information.
