PAWLEY  JOHN age 27 killed 11/08/1917 Private Norfolk Regiment 8th Bn Belgium '43701' YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL Panel 4
SON OF WILLIAM AND SUSANNAH PAWLEY, OF QUAKER LANE, FAKENHAM, NORFOLK

Hello Folks, I am looking for help in locating as much info on the above for his 80+ relative who has been trying to find out more about her Uncle for years.

She has asked me if I can help, but all I have found is the above and his Medal card.
She has his death plaque as well. I have him on all of the Census’s, but would like to find out where and when he joined up, and anything else that might fill in the gaps.
There seems to be a lot of info on his brothers and cousins, can you help please.

Best Regards
Irene

Many thanks for contacting me, I do have the names of his siblings from the Census thank you, I am looking for more info on John himself, such as did he enlist in Fakenenham/Norwich ect. Also it would be good to see his service record, but I have looked and did not get anywhere, once again, thank you.

Regards
Irene

in case any died young and are not on census returns - there is a list on www.familysearch.org of baptisms
William Loius Pawley
Beatrice Daisey Pawley were both baptised 2nd march 1881
Mary Pawley
May Pawley  both baptised 21st sept 1885
Frank Pawley
John Pawley both baptised 11th August 1889
Edgar James Pawley baptised 28th October 1891
Gladys Pawley
May Pennell Pawley both baptised 18th November 1898

I can only presume that May 1885 died and May Pennell Pawley 1898 was named after her ...maybe Susannah maiden name was Pennell ??

The 8th.(Service) Batt. was part of the 53rd. Brigade 18th. Eastern Div.
From the end of July 1917 to 10th. Nov. the 53rd. was involved in the 3rd. Battle of Ypres more commonly known as Passchendaele.
He probably fell during this battle but there's a possibility he may have been wounded before this & died later.
To find out when he joined without the benefit of his service docs. you would need to find others of his Regiment with no's. close to his.
I'll see what I can find.

jim

Edit:
Service no's. during the war could be quite erratic but looking at several around his number my best estimation would be he attested in 1915 but don't chisel it in stone.
The 8th. Service Batt. was formed as part of Kitchener's Army (K2).

Oh thank you Jim,
This is good for me, as I want to be able to build a bit of a timeline for John.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Re Private John Pawley
The only information I have been able to get since my last posting was from the Norfolk Regiment Museum below.

Private John Pawley 43701 8th service battalion Norfolks.
Born and enlisted Fakenham.
Possibly initially with the 6th Territorial Battalion before transfer to the 8th.
In hospital at Abbeville 2.1.1917, Pyrexiel (fever) unknown origin.
Missing 11.8. 1917. Died on or since the 11. 8/1917
No known grave.

Does anyone know where the Abbeville Hospital was and if we can get records from there?

Grateful for any help

Kind regards
Irene
