Assistance, please - where is this place?
« on: Sunday 22 June 14 21:01 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage entry from South Leith OPR dated 1782 - the handwriting is clear but it is my only clue (so far) about the antecedents of the bride.

She was Euphemia Muir, daughter of Alexander Muir (deceased) of ? Blairbaith (Blairbailh doesn't make much sense).

Is this Blairbeth - modern spelling?  If so, can anyone tell me anything about it in the 18th century?  Euphemia died in 1784.  She and her husband had one son, James.  I've not had any success with a baptism for her.  No idea where she was born.  No obvious testament for Alexander in Scotland.  Checked the English wills and the Alexander Muir who died in 1762 names his mother in Anstruther Easter, Fife, so I don't think that can be him.

Any ideas?

Hi

Note the register reads 'Blairbeith' near Rutherglen. In todays Rutherglen there is an area called Blairbeth ( a housing estate with some local amenities and parks)

Found a few references by G**gling.

As it's expressly desribed as "near Rutherglen" it must be Blairbeth. There doesn't seem to be much detail online as to the history of the area prior to the arrival of the Robertson cotton family in the 19th Century

There is an Alexander Muir and Isabell Barr having children in Rutherglen in the right sort of period, although no sign of a Euphemia on the index. From Family Search www.rootschat.com/links/01640/

Note that he is described as of Blairbaith. This specifically implies that he actually owned Blairbaith. Therefore there should be some record of him in the Registers of Sasines. See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=26232.9

There are indexes to the Lanarkshire Sasines for 1617 to 1780 (two volumes) which would tell you whether Alexander Muir of Blairbeth is mentioned, and the relationships to him of anyone else mentioned in the same sasines.

Unfortunately I don't have access to these at the moment, but perhaps someone else might be able to take a look on your behalf.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
