Hello -

I would imagine that 'Gef' is an abbreviation of Gefängis, the German word for prison. There was a subcamp of Buchenwald at Giessen in World War II.

There are other links from the links given that show how life was there during war.

Sad and despicable

I have now had a chance to do a lot more research using links etc., and I found the mention of his being awarded the M.Medal in the London gazette. (Wish I knew how to find out what he got it for.)  I have also found Ernest Garrity’s  name and details amongst Prisoners of 1st WW site.  Found his POW number and know he was in a POW camp at Giessen in March 1918.

Unfortunately the headings are in I believe a gothic script and I find I am unable to decipher them properly in order to translate them.  Some of the meanings are obvious but wonder if someone can help particularly the 5th column.

Lastly I have a copy document referring to a postcard he sent to his brother addressed to 2/Lieut.Garrity, No 2 Stores Depot, RAF, Regents Park.  Any advice on how to go about tracing RAF personnel.
