I've been looking for this man in the wrong place. He was born anywhere between 1831 (Marriage certificate in 1858 says he was 27), 1834 (he was STILL 27 in the 1861 Census), and 1835 (he was apparently 62 when he died in 1897). He was the son of Thomas Archer and Jean (or Janet) Burch or Burge, and was an agricultural labourer who settled in Lanarkshire in the 1850s and married an Isabella Kyle in Avondale.
He couldn't read or write at all, so it's perhaps not surprising that he was vague about historical details. Any information on him or his family gratefully received.
