Illegitimate child?
« on: Thursday 12 September 13 12:07 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have a Mary Gobby born c.1796 in Lidlington, the wife of William Lawson. She was baptised 28 Feb 1796 in Lidlington and her mother is listed as Sarah Gobby. No father is mentioned, so I was wondering if she might be illegitimate or maybe her that was her mother's married name and her father was dead? Is there any way of finding out?

I found these other children but I don't know if they're related:

If the father isn't mentioned it is usually because the child is illegitimate. Have you seen the actual parish records, they sometimes give extra information ie base born may have been written at the side.   If that is the same Sarah each time she was certainly busy.  ;D

thanks for the reply  :) No I haven't been able to see the actual record; I got it from the family search website. I think it's likely she was illegitimate, especially as you say and it is the same Sarah!

You may be able to investigate further - some ideas on where you may find information related to Sarah:

Mary Gobby is illegitimate; from the Lidlington parish records transcript.....

Baptisms
6 Nov 1785 Richard son of Sarah Gobby, reputed father William Roe
3 Jun 1787 John son of Sarah Gobby
27 Jan 1793 Thomas illeg son of Sarah Gobby
28 Feb 1796 Mary illeg daughter of Sarah Gobby

Burials
5 Jan 1786 Richard son of Sarah Gobby & William Roe

There is a marriage at Lidlington on 30 Nov 1802 of James Tatt, widower to Sarah Gobby. James Tatt married twice before, first to Ann Mann on 20 Nov 1789, when Ann died, buried 22 Mar 1796 he married Sarah Saunders on 13 Jan 1798. Wife Sarah was buried 19 Jun 1798

Possible baptism of Sarah Gobby on 14 Jun 1761 daughter of Richard & Judith Gobby

Later burials at Lidlington, James Tatt on 25 Aug 1829 age 66 (born 1763) and Sarah Tatt on 1 Apr 1835 age 76 (born 1759)
