Wreathes Dumfrieshire
« on: Sunday 29 May 11 14:04 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone tell me were Wreathes is in Dumfries?

I would like to know where William Copland of Wreathes lived. He died 1692.

Thank you.

I can't see it, or anything remotely similar mentioned here:

Do you have references to any other places William lived? I'm wondering if it may have been a farmstead or some tiny village. Is 'Wreathes' only mentioned in the context you have given: "William Copland of Wreathes"? Where did you find this mention of Wreathes?

Lots of questions I'm sorry ... I'll probably be best to leave this mystery to the Dumfriesshire experts to solve.

A quick google found mention of:
Wreaths Castle (Mainsriddle) and Wreaths Tower (between Dumfries and Moffat)

I may be completely off with this, but if you look at the location of Mainsriddle on a modern map and compare it with this:
http://maps.nls.uk/counties/view/?id=236
... along the bottom coast outlined in pink to the left of the big indent, you see New Abbey, then to the left of that is Wraiths ... I wonder if this might be Wreathes?  :-\

Yes I think I'm right. You can see it more clearly here, and it's called Wreaths:
http://maps.nls.uk/joins/649.html
click on the left half of the map, then enlarge the bottom right corner. Wreaths is just below Village of Mains, and NW of Southerness Point.

 :)

Thank you very much for the replies. Most grateful. :)

I was looking for Testaments of William Copland and found this one of Wreathes for 1692. As it is around the right date I thought that it may be one I would buy if it was in the right place.

Where I really want it to be is somewhere near Moffat or Kirkpartick Juxta. So if I could find out more about the Wreaths Tower between Moffat and Dumfries that would be great. But can not seem to. :(

Whenever I google wreathes it comes up with florists!!

Is it a coincidence that Mainsriddle (Wreathes), Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfries and Moffat are all on the A710?

Might it be possible that it is the same William Copland? Maybe a process of elimination would tell you if there were more than one at that time in that area, though I realise that's difficult and dependent on surviving records ...

Hi

Mainsriddle is on the A710 and Moffat is on the A701.  Mainsriddle is near Dalbeattie and is a long way from Moffat. Mainsriddle being to the west of Dumfries and Moffat/Kirkpatrick Juxta being to the east.  Kirkpatrick Juxta  sits beside the A74.

Regards

Kathleen

oh well, I'm not too good with numbers ... 710/701... looked similar on that little road. It was a nice idea.  ;D

So Judy, due to the distance betweeen these places, do you think that the 'William Copland of Wreathes' is not your William?
