Walter Family Wiltshire - Yatesbury/Wroughton
« on: Wednesday 23 April 14 22:14 BST (UK) »
Hi wondering if I could have a look up for the surname and family details of Mary ........ the wife of Richard Walter - Yeoman. Married about 1740 I don't have a date sorry. Mary has 4 children baptised Wroughton. Susannah Bap 14 Mar 1745 , Richard Bap - 9 Jan 1757, John Bap ............, Rachel Bap - 29 Apr 1753. Any help would be appreciated. Mary died 1787 and is buried at Yatesbury.

Hi Lisa,

You mention Mary as the wife of Richard Walter. I can't find one that matches but looking at the transcripts for Wroughton (Ex Wilts FHS), some of the children listed (Susannah 13-3-1744/5, Leah 29-10-1746 & John 27-9-1748)  are bapt. with parents Richard & Susanna. I haven't found a bapt. for either Richard or Rachel in Wroughton

There is a marriage of Richard Walter to Susaana Smith 11-5-1741 in Fyfield,  a parish not far away
from Wroughton.

Does this help?

Hi Alan thanks for your reply. Why I believe the mother was Mary is I have found the grave of Richard and Mary Walter buried at Yatesbury along with John Washbourn husband of Susannah Walter. They are also buried with son John Walter. Funny thing is the dates sort of match, I wonder if Mary/Susannah went under two names?

Hi Lisa,

This is what I have found in the Yatesbury transcripts;
30-10-1775 John Washbourne, otp
                  Susannah Walters, otp
Yatesbury. By Licence

also in the Wilts Marriage Licence Bonds CD (Wilts FHS) is this entry;

John Washbourn, Famer of Yatesbury, Wilts
Susannah Walter,           "        "           "
Bondsman; Richard Walter, Farmer,
28-10-1775

So from this Richard  Walter(s)  died and Susanna remarried to John Washbourn(e)

However I have found some more entries that may be of interest;
Yatesbury bapts;
29-4-1753   Rachel Walter   d/o Richard & Rebecca

9-1-1757     Richard    "       s/o Richard & Susanna

25-9-1776   Richard Washbourn s/o John & Susanna
16-11-1778 John              "         "     "            "
28-2-1780   Ann               "        d/o   "            "
18-11-1782  Susannah     "          "     "            "

Still can't find any reference to a Mary Walter (could she have been a d/o Rich'd & Susanna ??)

Maybe she was a daughter and I have taken her as a wife. But I wonder where Susannah is if she was Richards wife? Susannah Walter only married once and that was to John Washbourn Richard was her father. John washbourn and Susannah Walter where neighbours as children and that is how they met. Both Richard Walter and Johns father John were farmers with farms next to each other.

Hi turns out the inscription on the grave for the Walters is for a John Walter and Wife Mary and their infant son Richard
“To the Memory of Mary Walter
Wife of John Walter who departed this life
The 22 June 178- aged -7 Years.
And of Richard their Son who died in his infancy.”

“Also of John Walters
Who died February
Aged......

Do you have any more information on Susannah Smith such as parent details or baptism?

Regards Lisa

Hi Lisa,

I don't have any transcripts for Fyfield so am unable to help with that parish.
On the IGI there are some Susanna Smith entries which may include the one your after. (go to this link);

When you get to this page just select "female" under gender and check the box next to birthplace - this will just bring up those in the year range 1715 - 1725 .
