Elizabeth Letton born Haddington 1813 on 1881 Scots Census
« on: Thursday 01 May 14 19:41 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am looking for some inspiration! Elizabeth Letton nee Pinkerton my gt gt grandmother is proving very elusive on the 1881Scots Census;I have found her on all others 1841- 1871 and 1901 when she is a pauper in the Edinburgh Workhouse. I have searched  in vain for her on Find my Past, Ancestry, LDS and Scotlands People using wildcards (L?TT?N) as the vowels are often changed. I cannot find her sons George b 1856, Richard b 1849 or William b1848 on the 1881 census either.  ??? ???
Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi geniespot,

Not had much success on the 1881 search either. I then went back to 1871 and tried to find her there, but had difficulty due to the variation in spellings. I searched for son, "George born 1856 Edinburgh" but did not get the correct family in 1871 either. So could you give us what you found in 1871 , i.e. address where she stayed, birthplace and approx. age, also the spelling you found as well.

Hi Geniespot,
Wondered if this chap George G Leighton on the 1910 US Census could be Elizabeth's son - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M2KB-GJT . According to this record the date of immigration was 1879 , so this George would not be on 1881 Scottish Census.
The birth of Elizabeth Letton's son George - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQBN-1DD
His full name was George Gibson Letton born 11th Jan 1856 to William Henry Letton and Elizabeth Pinkerton at Edinburgh. The middle name beginning with G ties in with above Census record and if correct maybe gives you another spelling version of Letton to check out.

Hi Looby,

That is the one I found on LDS, but with all the variations in spelling, thought I would ask for more info.

Tom and Looby

Thanks for your replies.

In 1871 Elizabeth Letton with sons' George and Richard is living at 6 Hill Square Nicholson Street St Cuthberts Edinburgh.

By 1891 Elizabeth Letton is a Pauper Inmate in St Cuthberts parish, presumably in the Poorhouse, George Letton is married (1884) and in 1891 is living with wife Marion at 44 Fountainbridge Road Edinburgh. He is a painter and decorator.

Not surprising it is hard to find the family on one of the transcripts in 1871 Tom, see below:

Elizabeth Lehon 49 b. Haddington
Richard Lehon 70 son b. shop keeper b. South Leith
George Lehon 15 son shopboy b. Edinburgh

Address: 6 Hill Square, Newington/ Edinburgh

Hi folks,
So the US George Leighton is not your man if he is married to a Marion and living in Edinburgh n 1891.
And if George Letton didn't marry till 1884 he may still have been with his mother during 1881.
What was his address at time of his marriage, Geniespot? That might help locate him in 1881.
