Learmonth, Penicuik
« on: Saturday 02 August 14 10:20 BST (UK) »
Have been able to find some more information, since my last visit.
Looking for the marriage of William Learmonth to Annie Clapperton McLaren about 1918
Would like to know where William was born, so I can trace the family back through the various census records.  As always, all help and suggestions will be much appreciated.

Hello

There is a marriage of a William Learmonth, aged 23, a Grocer's salesman and Cpl 3rd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers to an Annie MacLean, aged 25, (not Mclaren though) on 7 June 1918 in Penicuik?  She was a papersmith's worker.

His father William Learmonth (timekeeper in an Ironworks) and mother Margaret (can't read her surname properly looks like Loutitt), her father William MacLean (papersmith worker) and mother Mary Clapperton (deceased as at 1918). Annie was from Penicuik.

His address at time of marriage was 48 North Jackson Street in Coatbridge but his barracks was at Welsby nr Grimsby

Could this be the one you are after?

possible hit in 1901 at 39f Kildonan Street, Coatbridge

William Learmonth, 35, born Lady Parish Orkney, Stocktaker at Plate Mill
Margaret Learmonth, 35, born Rousay, Orkney
George Learmonth, 8, Scholar born Rousay, Orkney
William Learmonth, 6, Scholar born Rousay, Orkney
Mary E Learmonth, 3, born Coatbridge

There is a boarder with them called Robert Learmonth,  a joiner,  that could be a relative aged 24 born Lady Parish.

Move to 1911 and they are at 34c Kildonan Street.

William, aged 45
Margaret, aged 43 married for 19 years, 6 children all 6 still living

Children on the 1911 are

George, aged 18, General Labourer in ironworks
William, aged 16, Message boy for a Butcher
Mary Helen, aged 13 in School
Bertie, aged 9 in School, born Coatbridge
James Loutitt, aged 5 in School, Coatbridge (must confirm that the mother was Margaret Loutitt after all) and finally Leonard, aged 3 born Coatbridge.

there is a also a Robert W McCraigie, aged 25, Stepson so perhaps Margaret Loutitt was married before?

100% sure you are correct with
William Learmonth, aged 23, a Grocer's salesman and Cpl 3rd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers to an Annie MacLean, aged 25.
What is the best site to find the earlier census records, so that I can trace the Learmonth line and perhaps get a copy of the marriage certificate for William & Margaret. Can also look for census / marriage details for George, Mary Helen & Bertie.

Scotlands People would be your best bet particularly if you are after marriages but its pay per view.

Familysearch.org is free but there's no guarantee the right records would be on there

Thank you all for the help. I know that William Learmonth was born about 1894, married in Penicuik in 1918 and died 1942. Annie & William had 4 children. William, John, Ella & Leonard.
I know the history going forward, but not the Learmonth lineage, through William. How far back will the census records take me and how reliable are they.

census records will go back to 1841 and by and large they are reliable save that they are subject to human error sometimes (spellings mostly as they are done phonetically) and the enumerators were very dependent on what the household told them but I'd say they are one of the more reliable sources out there.

Having gone through all the information, I am really now looking for the marriage of William Learmonth, born about 1836, in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, who married Mary ?? born about 1834 in Rousay & Egilshay, where they married about 1857-1859. If I can find a marriage certificate I can go back one more generation. I see that their first child is called Jane Laurie Learmonth. Could her mother's maiden name have been Laurie.
