Habgood family
« on: Wednesday 10 September 14 19:08 BST (UK) »
Thomas and Mary Habgood born 1796 (c) Gloucestershire. Not sure if they had 8 or 6 children

According to the 1841 census
Robert born 1817
Thomas born 1821
Martha born 1829
William born 1832
Elizabeth born 1834
Ellen born 1836

1851 census
Robert born 1830 Cirencester
William born 1833 Cirencester
Margaret born 1836

Could Ellen be short for Margaret?

My first thought that the 1841 census had Robert born wrong year, but there is a baptism on familysearch for Robert born 1817, if so where was the the second Robert in 1841? Unless the 1851 census is wrong

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Helina,
Source: Gloucestershire Family History Society (GFHS)
Not too sure which parish I should be looking at, but here is a family group of baptisms at All Saints, Down Ampney to the parents of Thomas & Mary HABGOOD of Down Ampney, which is in the Cirencester Registration District:-
02/10/1825, HABGOOD, Amy
23/08/1829, HABGOOD, Martha
04/09/1831, HABGOOD, William Norris
22/06/1834, HABGOOD, Elizabeth
13/06/1836, HABGOOD, Helen
Must interface with your tree eventually?
If this isn't the parish, then get back to me as there are other family groups in this District.

Hi Victor,

From your first message the names fit well,  There is quite a gap between Thomas born 1821 and Martha born 1829 so Amy born 1825 looks good but very likely died before 1841.

The whole family were Drapers.

according to the 1841 census the family were living in Down Ampney.

So looks like they lost 2 daughters before 1841 Sophia and Amy, but what has happened to Robert born 1817? according to familysearch Robert was baptised on the 1 June 1817 at South Cerney, parents Thomas and Mary Habgood

Thanks

Margaret Helen Habgood and Helen Habgood both born 1836, but baptised in June but different dates otherwise I would of thought they were the same person.

Hi Helina,
Robert Yeo HABGOOD, son of Thomas & Mary of Cerney Wick, baptised at All Hallows, South Cerney, 1st June 1817.
The correct date of the birth of William HABGOOD should read 14/07/1832.

Victor.  Have a apology to make.  Since starting this thread I started another on on the London board.   I was also looking for the marriage  of William Habgood to Maria Bartlet in London 1872.  They found the marriage plus a few other details stating that William's father was called Robert not Thomas as I thought.  I know the marriage they found is correct.

So the second batch of baptisms must be correct,

Hi Helina,
I don't know if that is with relief or not? Never mind. Just post if you need any extras.

Hi Helina,

Think I might be going the throw a spanner in the works here.

1851 census:
Thomas Habgood widower 59 farmer 365 acres employing 15 men b Cerney Wick living Down Ampney
Robert Habgood 32 bc 1819 farmer's son b Cerney Wick
Mary Habgood 30 bc 1821 Cerney Wick
Martha Habgood 21 bc 1830 Cerney Wick
Elizabeth Habgood 16 bc 1835 Cerney Wick
Ellen Habgood 14 bc 1837 Cerney Wick

These tie in with your 1841 census listing.

1861 census:
Thomas Habgood 69 still farmer
Robert Habgood 43

Thomas died 24 July 1870. Probate granted on oaths of Robert Habgood, son and Robert Kimber Habgood, Draper

In 1861 there are two lots of Habgoods working as drapers in Dyer Street, Cirencester:
Robert Kimber with wife Sophia

Robert bc 1831 and brother William bc 1833

The Robert you listed bc 1830 is a different one to Thomas's son and from a different family.  Not been able to trace Robert Kimber back to see if he was father of the Robert bc1830, seem likely as both drapers.
