I came across the attached in the New Zealand Tablet of 15th November 1878. It is not clear from the context where the Glasgow in which the meeting was held was.

The reference to the Lord Provost strongly suggests that it was the city of Glasgow in Scotland.

In Scotland, the office of provost corresponds with that of mayor in the rest of the English-speaking world. Only the provosts of major cities are called the Lord Provost.

In England, a provost is an official of the (anglican/episcopal, not presbyterian) church.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi Forfarian, jennywren001 and isk,  :)  :D

Thank you for joining this post and offering help and advice on how to trace Rev George Hay further. You all know so much more than more on the subject. Your generosity in taking the time to contribute is very much appreciated. I am looking forward to trying the sites you have suggested.  ;D

Many, many thanks,

Warm regards,
