Ann Evans, Ragland
« on: Wednesday 26 February 14 09:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I am stuck on a few family members but am going to post them separately so as not to inundate with my brick wall dilemas!

I have a relative, Ann Evans. I have her marriage certificate to James Davies on 29 July 1861 in the parish of Trellech, which shows her father as being a Henry Evans.

Going back to the earlier census's I can not see the right Ann Evans with Henry Evans as her father. I am presuming therefore, she might have been bought up by another relative?

How can I find out more about her parents? Who is her mother? And which Henry Evans was it?

Any help is very very appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome to Rootschat!   ;D

Do you have James & Ann on a census? If so, could you give the details including ref? We need years of birth at least.

Thank you :-)

And I Knew I'd forget something!  :-[

1871 census Piece 5306 Folio 60 Page 7
1881 census Piece 5230 Folio 75 Page 11
1901 Census piece 4932 Folio 20 Page 31.

Yes Mike, their marriage certificate is indeed Davis, but by 1871 they are Davies.

As I say the marriage certificate for Ann Evans and James Davies shows her father to be Henry Evans. He is not listed as deceased on the marriage certificate.

Any ideas?  ??? ??? ???

I'm guessing that Henry must have been married to Ann's mother as she has taken his surname.... and my understanding is that if you were illegitimate back in the 1840s you would not take the fathers name?

Would someone born in Ragland around the 1840s be registered in Monmouth or Abergavenny?

I am presuming because on Anns wedding certificate Henry is not listed as deceased he is clearly not dead - so why would she not be on a census in the 1840s and 1850s with her father?

maybe she was born after the 1841 census but that doesn't explain 1851
