Help needed to find Aberclwyd Manor in Derwen
« on: Tuesday 08 April 14 14:51 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
From newspaper items dated between the late 1870's to 1880, I know that the house called Aberclwyd was situated in Derwen, Denbighshire.
I have a name - Charles Wood, who was  living there during that period. My interest however is in the house, and I cannot find any mention of it in the censuses for Derwen between 1870 and 1911. (Aberclwyd is still there, today)
Any advice on where I can now look?
Thanks

I notice that Charles William WOOD that you mentioned, died in 1884 in Devon.

A bit of googling revealed as mention that led to a probate for:
On 14 May 1898, Miss Ann Alice PARKER, spinster,  of Aberclwyd, Derwen  died  age 92. Her probate was issued to William Ashbury GREEN £3444, 1s, 3d

And to a sippet in Google Books:
In 1873, the RETURN OF OWNERS OF LAND, Presented to Both Houses of Parliament by Command of Her Majesty, Volume 2, listed:
Anne Alice PARKER , Aberclwyd Derwen

Could this be the right Census, 1871 & 1891:

CENSUS 1871: Aber Clywd, Parish of Derwen and Dyfanedd, Denbighshire
RG10 - Piece 5663, Folio 42, Pg4
Head: Elizabeth WHALLEY 66, widow, Annuitant, b London
Sister: Ann Alice PARKER 64, unm, Annuitant, b London
Sister: Catherine PARKER 62, unm, Annuitant, b London
Servant: Margret HUGHES 21, unm, Domestic Servant,  b Gwyddelwern, Merionethshire

Next door was the address "Lodge", occupied by Thomas HUGHES 42, Slater, b Gwyddelwern, Merionethshire and his wife Ruth and a number of children.

1891: Aber Clywd, Parish of Derwen, Denbighshire
RG12 - Piece 4622, Folio 33, Pg1
Head: Anne A PARKER 84, unm, Living on own means, b London
Sister: Catherine PARKER 82, unm, Living on own means, b London
Servant: Elizabeth JONES 25, unm, General Servant, b Llangwm, Denbigh
Servant Boy: John E WATKIN 10,  b Corwen, Merioneth

One one side (on the census page)  is address: Pare Bach. On the other side is address: Coedy foel.

Cheers

Hi Ambly.
Thanks for the info.
Yes, I'd spotted the census returns for 1871 & 1891, and the occupants of Aberclwyd. Other censuses describe the house as unoccupied or uninhabited at the time - although I know that Charles Wood was a tenant between about 1877 and 1880/1.
Thanks for the probate item, and Google Books. I'm hoping to meet the current owners of Aberclwyd soon, so these names and dates might be mentioned in their deeds/papers. If not, they'll be pleased to read this.
Thanks again.
