Stanaway Giles Vigors
« on: Saturday 02 August 14 13:34 BST (UK) »
I was lucky enough to find a transcript of my GGGgrandmother in The Old Bailey records. Eleanor (Giles) Stanaway was a dressmaker. She was married to James Stanaway of Probus in 1805. Her parents were John Giles and Eleanor Coad and she was born in Cornwall in 1785. She must have lived in London for a while to make money for the family before the entire family moved to Wisconsin. In the record from The Old Bailey she mentions her uncle "Vigors". I am trying to find out more about him including who he married within her family. I am hoping this will also help me find out more about her father and mother. I tried that standard Cornwall transcriptions and couldn't find anything.
Here is a link to the transcription:

I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks very much!

At the marriage of John Giles and Eleanor Coad, at Mevagissey 7th April 1774, one of the witnesses was John Verco.

Could that surname be misinterpreted as Vigors?

There are nearly 300 baptisms for surname Vigors and variants.
Vigores, Vigures, Vigers, Vigurs, Vigors, Vicars, Vagures, Vickers, Vagers, Vigiers, Vugers, etc!!

A possibility?
Marriage at Falmouth, 1826

given the number of marriages where he was witness, it looks like John Verco was the parish clerk in Mevagissey.

Thanks very much KGarrad and osprey. I will see what I can find with the information. I am amazed at the number of variants! Before pursuing this line I was not familiar with this surname.

Just wanted to follow up that the marriage that KGarrad posted is indeed the sister of Eleanor Giles. Thanks very much for your help in solving this mystery. I certainly appreciate all of the help!

Thanks for letting us know.
I do so enjoy it when a supposition/possibility turns out to be correct! :D :D
