Benjamin seems to have had a few occupations. On his children's baptisms he is a labourer in Pensarn, Carmarthen on Rachel's baptism in 1830, a carpenter in Pensarn on John's baptism in 1833, a boatman in Steam Mill, Carmarthen on George 1839 and Hannah 1841, still a boatman in Carmarthen for David in 1844, and a carpenter in Carmarthen for Benjamin in 1846. These places are all in the same area of Carmarthen near the river Towy.

On the census he is a carpenter in 1841, a coal merchant in 1851 and 1861, and a ship's carpenter in 1871 and 1881. All St Peter's, Carmarthen. He probably combined the carpentry and being a coal merchant, and all in the area near the river Towy so ship's carpenter makes sense, as does boatman.

Hope this helps,

Rhosgoch

The baptisms are on Familysearch, but to see images of the register you will have to go to Findmypast and buy credits or a subscription.

The census information again on Familysearch, but to see images you will have to go to Findmypast or Ancestry, and spend money.

Regards,

Rhosgoch

I am curious about your Rhosgoch name.  Does it come from family background, possibly Hartford area?  Sandra

Hi,

"Rhosgoch" was the name of the farm in Carmarthenshire which was home to my mother's family for over a century. Sorry, no connection to Hartford area.

R.

Sorry a mistype.  It should have been harford near pumpsaint, Carmarthenshire. My cousin's mother was brought up there.  Her father worked for the Dolaucothi estate.  Rhosgoch was a small farm/smallholding.  Sandra

Sorry, my Rhosgoch is in the west of the county and was a large farm. Mother's family originated in the Llanwinio area, then Laugharne. Would have been nice to have made a connection. R.

Never mind.  My cousin and I have been traveling capel dewi area following mutual family footsteps.

Have yet to start on her Rhosgoch people.

As you say it would have been nice to connect.

Good luck in your search.  Sandra
