Title: What does Patron mean in the Church of England Records

Hi there

I am working on one of my lines that leads back to the Wylde Family of the Commandery.  This gentleman's direct line is to Viscount Robert Tracy II of Rathcoole.  When I have been looking at the clergy records I keep seeing the term Patron.  What does that mean exactly.  Here is Charles Edmund Wylde's records.  Thanks for your help and explanation.

A patron had the legal right to nominate a clergyman to a living, or benefice, i.e. an advowson. The rights of patronage were attached to land, or property, and could be bought, sold, or given away, lay advowsons became common after the reformation when monastic estates and holdings were sold off by Henry VIII . The Patron may be a bishop, the Crown, a cathedral chapter, a college or institution, a guild, a trust, another incumbent, or a lay person.

Ah ha...thanks Stan.  What would it mean if King George III was his patron...any significance at all?  Thanks.

It just means, historicaly the Crown held the patronage of Rodington, and could nominate the clergyman. In the History, Gazetteer & Directory of Shropshire, 1851, Rodington was in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor.

In the 1829 Ecclesiastical Directory the patron is also the Lord High Chancellor, probably on behalf of The Crown.
