Ann Mackay
« on: Friday 07 December 12 16:17 GMT (UK) »
In 1901 Census for Migdale:-
Ann Mackay, Pauper, 63, born Rogart
Jane Mackay, Niece, Dessmaker,  29, born Elgin

In 1911 Census:-
Jane Mackay, Head, 39
William Gunn, Boarder, 11
Duncan Matheson, Boarder, 7
Perhaps the the boys were fostered there.  Have heard they called her Auntie Jeannie.
Anyone out there with any information on Ann or Jane?

Hello

Anything really. Birth and Death dates, place of death, or who parents were.
It has been hinted that they could have been connected to the Mackay's of Hereford.

By whom?  What additional info is known on which that assumption is based?

Have you looked back at earlier census entries for both of them to get more info?

Was  Ann a widow in 1901?  Earlier census entries will give her husbands name which should enable you to find her marriage details.

If she married from 1855 onwards - the marriage cert will give parental details including her mothers maiden name

If you are unable to find her marriage or if she was a spinster,  have you looked for her death on Scotlands people as her death cert will give parental details etc

If you are unable to find Jane on earlier censuses - you will need to look for a death for her to establish her parentage

Scotlands People is the only website for BMD details for that period and it is a pay per view site (credits purchase)

I have no further information.  An elderly lady, now long gone, used to say there was a connection to the Herefords, but as she was a bit ecentric I was never quite sure.
I did some research on the Herefords but never managed to tie the two.

Hi Langwell   :)

You say the 1901 Census was Migdale , does that come under the Bonar district ?
What was Jane's birthplace on the 1911 Census , where was that Census taken ?

There is a subtle difference there dependant on what additional info you already know.

Do you mean the MacKay family from Hereford in England.

Or - is the family surname Hereford

The Mackay family lived at Achillach, Rogart.
Their son John went south where he became a successful railway engineer.
Thereafter he was referred to as John Mackay of Hereford and his siblings seemed to be always refered to as "The Herefords"
