James Allen born Wexford 1857/1858
« on: Saturday 15 February 14 19:28 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I am trying to trace the baptism and family of James Allen who appears in the 1881 Census in Crewe, Cheshire, England.
He is a lodger 24yrs Assistant Iron Roller in Iron Works, states born Ireland, with a Nicholas Doogan and family from Ireland.
It isn't until the 1911 Census that Wexford, Ireland appears as his birth place.
On his marriage certificate 1881 at St Mary's R.C. Church, Crewe to Ann Jane Connelly b Cootehill, Cty Cavan, Ireland it states his father as James Allen from Ireland.
I wish I had more clues to his birth, is anyone able to guide me in the direction of his baptism in Wexford?
With thanks, marthaannie

does the census mention if that's County Wexford or Wexford town ?

best to know a town or parish before you try to start a search.
Do you have his father's occupation or any possible Allen relations as witnesses from the marriage ?

Hello athacliath62
1911 Census: Wexford, Ireland, not sure if County Wexford or Wexford town.
Father James Allen, no occupation listed, just from Ireland listed.
Witness: John Doogan, son of Nicholas Doogan Head of family where James was lodging in the 1861 Census.
Second witness: Helena Bouchero (spelling not clear) of Crewe.
Thank you for your interest, marthaannie

Hi

You reckon James was 24 in 1881, so born around 1857 in Wexford, with a Father also named James.

The 1901 census of Ireland shows a widower, James Allen, age 80 (so born 1821) in New Ross, Wexford, along with his blind adult daughter Hannah.  It might be worth checking to see if this James could be the father of your James as the dates match quite well.

Cheers

Re Hannah Allen had a good read of the census form she is deaf and married? is she a daughter in law? checked Family Search 1901 to 1911 no death recorded for her so checked 1911 Census and found a 62 yr old Hannah Allen in Lady Lane,Wexford widowed with no children.

I wonder what brought James to Crewe usually people went to family already settled there, i noted from playing with the census on Family Search that a Nicholas Doogan in Crewe says he is from Wexford ,could he be an Uncle related to James through Nicholas's wife.

Hello dathai
Good thinking, thank you.  Mary Doogan could have been Mary Allen before marriage. John s/o Mary Doogan was best man at the marriage of James Allen, I thought they were good friends, maybe cousins?
Another thought:
1891 Census: 2 Bank Street, Crewe Monks Coppenhall, Parish of Christ Church
James Allen Head 33yrs b 1858 Ireland Machinist Railway Works
Annie J. Allen 33yrs b 1858 Ireland
Christopher Allen 8yrs b 1883 Scholar Crewe
Edward Allen 6yrs b 1885 Scholar Crewe
Walter Allen 4yrs b Crewe
Eugene Allen 1yr b 1890 Crewe

1891 Census: 3 Bank Street, Monks Coppenhall, Crewe
Patrick Allen 40 b 1851 General Labourer b Ireland
Wife Ann and family, with lodgers

Is it a coincidence that James & Patrick Allen lived at No. 2 and No. 3 Bank Street, or are they related too?
Thank you for your help.
