Holden - Crothers

I have just been looking at family graves again in Donaghadee Parish (CoI) church, Co Down, NI,  We have an extended family plot comprising of a group of 3 graves.  Each side is bordered by a "Crothers" grave that I am reasonably sure I know about, one at least being my G/G/ grandfather James Crothers of Herdstown, D' Dee, but the middle one has me baffled.  The inscription reads:

"Here Lyeth y body of thomas holden who died the 2nd of October 1738 aged 54 years
Also 4 of his children
Here lieth y Body of Luke Holden who died June the 7th 1760 aged 37 years.  Also Abbigal “Ruffell” (Russell?), a child
Also the body of James Crothers, son of John Corthers who died June 8 1777 _____ (illegible)"

The Crothers' graves that border the middle grave would be later - from about the late 1800's / early 1900's

I am trying to work out the connection between Holdens and Crothers so can anyone shed any light on the Holdens?

Missing marriage I think I saw a Holden -Clegg or viceversa marriage newtownards which made me think,as Clegg was a copeland islands name Possibly from family search.

Your transcription might be predated by Richard Clarke’s listings which was in Vol 16 in UHF  Tombstone inscriptions. See http://www.historyfromheadstones.com   My memory is he checked most of his transcriptions against The Memorials of the dead in Ireland pub about 1900 or earlier, if the cemetery had been included by them. So just maybe more words are known?

I didn't work backwards from the 1901 census where there are aged 60+ Holden's listed

Thanks for your reply.  There are definitely some positive leads especially the John Holden and Co - both my G/ G/ Grandfathers daughters were listed as dressmakers, the eldest Lizzie, b about 1850 so there still may have been a connection between the families at that time and slightly later.  Also from the Dee, I remember hearing of the Clegg's as one of the last families on the "big ilse" so that may be a connection.  I think you are right its church records that hold the key
