Is Gortinurty a typo or a real place?
« on: Monday 29 July 13 10:32 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any idea where Gortinurty, is?  I suspect it's around Malin, since it came from a marriage record that was registered, in the Malin Civil District.

I don't know it if a typo, or if the name was changed to something else, over the years.

Thanks,

Colleen

I would suspect it is a spelling error, thought it may be a townland of similar spelling but nothing seems obvious

Hi. there are a couple of very small townlands called Gort, 1 and 4 acres  within Clonca Parish and another in nearby Culdaff again 1 acre, Gort translates from the Irish as field, it could be a way of distinguishing one of these 'Gorts' ,Gort in Urty, but I can't find a match for Urty so unsure if this explanation is correct

Could it be Gortany, Carndonagh?

If an original record, could you post an extract for deciphering?

Possibly a townland nearby called Gortinarin.
