John Woods died Rufford, Nottinghamshire - where would he be buried?
« on: Tuesday 31 December 13 19:03 GMT (UK) »
My Great Great Grandfather John Woods died on 8th September 1862 at Rufford, Nottinghamshire. He was working at the Rufford Abbey estate. Any idea which church John would have been buried?

I wonder if it could have been at the estate church. This chapel was apparently rebuilt in 1735. The chapel was replaced in 1869 by the present church dedicated to St Mary the Virgin.  There must have been a church yard as well,  if not i suppose in one of the local village churches.

His burial is not coming up on the NFHS  cd. But Rufford does not feature on it anyway.(Rufford being one of Nottinghamshire's lost villages) Neither do council run cemeteries, so maybe that is also a possibility.
Burial registered.Sep 1862 John Woods, Southwell 7b/160
The Church and Chapel mentioned by Purlin is St Mary the Virgin at Rufford Lancashire. As far as I can remember Rufford Abbey , which was dissolved by good old King Henry, was called St Mary the Virgin. When bones were found in Rufford Abbey Notts they were buried in nearby Wellow.

Many thanks for all your replies - plenty of new leads to follow. Re looked at my family tree info - John was living with his son who was the forester working on the estate.

When I relooked at my tree John Woods senior (who wasn't the forrester) was living with his son Jon (who was the forrester) as per my thank you post above. It was John Woods senior who died while residing with his son (John the forrester).

There are 4 or 5 generations of John Woods so sometimes I get confused :)
