WALSH/HEWITT's from Longford
« on: Thursday 14 September 06 21:48 BST (UK) »
Need help!  The story goes.... my grandfather John Walsh was born in Canaan Airdes near Moate, Longford County in 1782.  He died in 1845 in Moate.  His wife was Letitia Hewitt born in 1783 in Moate and died in Bearbrook, Cumberland Township, Russel County, Ontario, Canada.  Now I believe that they married in 1803.  They had 10 children that I know of, many coming to Canada.  Now my Father is the Keeper of the Records, but I know that getting back just one more generation would be just a great surprise for him.  I have been searching and searching for the name Canaan Airdes and also for Moate but I am coming up blank.... any ideas where I can start hunting and maybe give him a surprise with some information that he does not have?  Thanks!
WALSH - Longford County, Ireland
HEWITT- Longford County, Ireland
BROWNLEE - Tipperary County, Ireland
RICHARDSON - Tipperary County, Ireland
HICKS - Ireland
GARDINER - Ireland
QUIRN - Ireland
MOFFETT - Ireland
MURPHY - Ireland
TANNER - Ireland
LEACH - Ireland

Most of these family came to Bearbrook, Cumberland Township, Russell County, Ontario, Canada

Hello Audean,
What document do you have which shows the placename Canaan Airdes ???

It does not look like an Irish placename.

hello audean.
saw your post re walsh moate. moate is in co westmeath ireland.
there was walshs on inchmore island, where i just found out a lot of my ancesters came from,
at the moment i dont know if those walshs are related to me but alot of other familys were.
a very good idea to do on this site is go into the surnames box and put up your details on it.
i found 2 cousins on the first night, 1 never knew existed, and actually she might be able to help you also.
if i can be of any help to you in the future, dont hesitate to ask.
best wishes,
cyril

There is no place by the name of Canaan Airdes. Careful examination reveals that this "name" if you will is drawn from Keenagh and Ardagh. The Moydow parish is central to these to towns and apparently is where John and Letitia were married. I have no actual proof of the date of marriage at this time, some have stated a date which I cannot confirm.
I have a tree extending from John/Letitia to present day..albeit following one specific line but addressing all children in the generations following.
Please contact if you like.
