Your feedback appreciated
« on: Thursday 24 July 14 11:52 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Been working on an old black and white photo "Broadway1915" - if you want to Google it.

Wanting your honest feedback on my attempts at colorizing it.

This has taken me over 50hrs and nearly 180 layers to complete.

I have had to resize the photo which weighed in at a healthy 1.9mb prior to the diet.

Your thoughts, comments and constructive criticism are anticipated and appreciated.

Regards Allan ;)

PS: The buildings colors are as close to accurate as I could get them, and are based on some early colored postcards of this and surrounding buildings I happened across while doing some homework on the location.

Thank you Judi for your kind words.

I have only been repairing photos for about 3-4mths and really wanted to set myself a task coloring an old photo.

Basically to try and understand how midtones, shadows and highlights work and to get a grasp on  layers.

It was a lot of fun and a lot of hours and getting feedback can only help me improve as time goes by.

Thanks again ;)

Lovely job Allen.

Being extremely picky, perhaps the horses could do with a little more colour (brown rather than grey), and I feel that the colour of leaves on the trees is a tiny bit articial looking, or perhaps a little variation in leaf colour may add realism.

As I said, this is just being overly picky. It is generally very very good.

Thanks for the feedback Ruskie,

Yes the leaves were a challenge and I played around for ages trying to get a more natural look, in the end I just gave them a "close enough that will do" finishing touch, my bad.  ::)

This is the kind of feedback I require, I have held off flattening the layers, just to allow a fresh set of eyes to run over it and see what my well worn eyes might have missed.

Appreciate the comments. ;)

As Ruskie says, one has to be extremly picky to find fault with it. The one thing that struck me is  the pavement (I think you call it a sidewalk) and the houses both being grey. These combine to suggest that it might be a coloured photo (which it is) but if they were both coloured it would make a very good picture fantastic.
Well Done

Kind Regards

AJ

Hi, I'm not a restorer (useless with a camera as well) but always follow the board.

Wow!! I love that, thanks for posting it, it's stunning.
