Hannah Hall.
« on: Saturday 26 October 13 18:43 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me with this? My great great grandmother Hannah Hall lived in Weedon Bec and in 1865 she married Thomas Butler, who was a soldier in the 83rd regiment of foot ( I believe he could have been Irish) she had two children. On the 1871 census she is living with her parents and I can find no sign of Thomas Butler. In 1872 she marries again, using her maiden name and stating she is a spinster. This time she marries at the parish church, her first marriage was at the register office. This time she marries Edward Birch, also a soldier. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks Lizzy Drippin.

Hello Lizzy
Do you have the marriage cert for Hannah's marriage to Thomas Butler?  Have found the 1871 census and she is a Hannah Butler 26, but has 3 children, Thomas,  Mary A and John.  I have checked her place of birth and it says - Kingston on Tharney.  Does that mean anything to you?

Hi.

So the 1st marriage was at Daventry Register Office? and the 2nd at Northampton
St.Sepulchres.

On the 1871 census the last child is named as John R Hall aged 2, whilst the other
children are named as Butler.

On freebmd both of the last 2 children are born in the Mar Qtr as Mary Ann Butler
and John Richard Hall.

Looking at the 1881 cenus for  Burton on Trent
RG11-2762, Folio 48, Page 10, Sch 36, 9, Barn Yd

The household is Edward a Labourer, 40, Dublin, Hannah 35, Kingston, Surrey
Thomas, 14, Labourer, Mary Ann, 12, Scholar, Henry, 9, Scholar, all Weedon,
Richard, Wife's Father, Wid, 72, Shoemaker, John Hall, Grandson, 12, Scholar.

Therefore is John the son of one of Hannah's siblings.

Hi, I am assuming That John is Hannah's brother's child, but I am not sure. Mary Ann Butler was my great grandmother. Hannah was born in Kingston upon Thames. They did move to Burton on Trent. I assume after Edward Birch left the army.
When I saw that she married Thomas Butler at the register office I though maybe he was catholic, but now I wonder if he was already married, which would account for her being a spinster on the second certificate. I have not been able to find Edward on a census either.

Hi Lizzy.

Are you able to say what the 2nd marriage certificate to Edward Birch says
then please so we may find some other clues.

I don't quite get the reason for the 2nd marriage Hannah noting herself as a Spinster
as she may not have declared her 1st husband.

Hi Sandy, I couldn't make the name of the church out until you told me, so I suppose you know the area. Do you know how near to Weedon Bec it is? She was married on the 2nd of November 1872, she is 27 and a spinster. Both her and Edwin are living at what looks like Silvin street, her father is Richard Hall shoemaker and her brother Joseph is a witness Ann I can't read the second name is the other witness. Not much help really.

Morning Lizzy.

I will take a look at it next week if no one does it sooner.

It would have more than likely been Silver Street.

Weedon is near Daventry which is about 10 miles from Npton.

Here is a link to a Northamptonshire map showing you.

http://www.wmcarey.edu/carey/maps/northants1787-2.jpg it is near
the word Warwick on the left hand side.

Just click on the Map and it will en-large it.

Good morning Sandy, thank you for your help. The reason I asked how near the church was to Weedon Bec is, If Thomas Butler had taken off and she just decided to marry again, would people have known that she was already married.
Thanks again Lizzy.
