Henry Moses - German in Durham 1861
« on: Saturday 20 June 09 20:56 BST (UK) »
I have traced an ancestor, whose first husband was Henry Moses.
He appeared 19 a Glazier in lodging Durham in the 1861 census born in Germany.

In 1865 he married my GGrandmother and her name became Maria Henry !

I think she may not have liked being called Moses, or the Henry may have been mis understood, when asked his name at the marriage replied Moses, Henry.

He died 4 years later.

I am trying to find out when and why he emigrated, I cannot find any family in england for him. He was born in 1842 Germany.

Where do I look ?

Hello Colin,

Henry Moses was with little doubt Jewish. His German secular name was possibly Hermann or Heymann; his Hebrew name possibly Chaim. (That was the case with my great-grandfather)

As to why, it was probably for ecomonic reasons that would have been linked to the restrictions imposed on the Jews. It could also have been to evade military conscription. In Prussia he would have been eligible for seven years of service from the age of 21.

Sorry that I cannot be more help.
