James Alfred Stokes and Family New York
« on: Wednesday 12 March 14 21:08 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for more information on one of my ancestors: James Alfred Stokes.  He was born in Cheshire, England, UK on 7th August 1880 and arrived in the US in around 1896/1897.  He settled in Rochester, NY and married (not confirmed) Berthe Louise Devancaze/Davancaze or Ziziger/Zeziger.  Berthe was Swiss and travelled a lot! She arrived in New York with her sister Juliette Zeziger in 1910.  She then somehow ends up in France travelling back to New York in 1915 with her son Louis Eugene Devancaze.  At this point her surname is Devancaze also.  The son was less than a year old and in later life he changed his name to Stokes.  James and Berthe had 4 other children that I know of: Alfred, Frank Howard, Henry and Charles W.  Alfred served in WWII and Frank emigrated to Australia in the 1950s.

I have a picture of: James Alfred; Berthe; Alfred and Frank Howard that I've found off of other people's trees.  I'd really like to try and find more information on any of these people, and learn what happened to them.

Please PM me if you have any information on living relatives of these people.

Thanks,

Have you tried to contact the owners of these family trees to look for living relatives?

Do you have dates of death for the people you mentioned?  If so, a good place to start looking for living relatives would be their obituaries.  If you are unsuccessful, we can try to look if you give us the dates/places of death.

Emily appears on a New York Passenger List -13 September 1913 - Livepool to New York.
Father Henry Stokes. Waverton. Chester. Has 2 children with her. Howard 3 years (suspect this is William Stokes on the 1930 census) and Gordon 11 months. Going to husband John McIvor. 624 Peach Street, Erie PA.
Also travelling is Ada Barnard (sister of Emily) aged 31 years. Last permanent address:- Havre De Grace. MD  Had lived in the USA 10 years. Some other writing which mentions a bro. Alfred stokes but I can't read the full text.
