Spades is the Library near Archives?   I was just thinking if there was a death notice.   I know the notices before 1955 were short and sweet, but if there was one, would it be worth looking at?

Hi Spades...

If you do head to Archives would you mind having a quick look through the following "Friedeburg" passenger list. It should only be a dozen or so photocopied pages. The passenger list which arrived with the ship into Napier in 1875 has since been eaten by insects (?) apparently. Archives have this photocopy of the original German passenger list.... or that's how I understand it. May well be wrong. All I know is it's not on LDS.

Passenger list of the "Friedeburg"
http://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=20351898

You're looking for a two or three year old Karen or Karen Bolette SURNAME, possibly the daughter of a Nicholas.

Having said that there is a three year old Karen, daughter of a Knud ANDERSEN on the following Norsewood website. Wonder if that's her. Maybe she changed KNUDSDATTER to NICHOLSON.

http://www.norsewoodcemetery.co.nz/ships/1875-friedeburg-emigrants-list.php

For the record, I've already checked the Fritz Reuter passenger list on LDS, with no success.

No problem if you can't do the search. In a day or two I'll get around to looking through the Norwegian parish registers for the birth details of Karen, daughter of Knud ANDERSEN. Shouldn't be too hard to find her parents when her mother has a maiden name like OLSDATTER GLOMSÅSHELLERUD

And if you want I can get to the Hastings library and see if there's a death notice, again in a day or two.

After so much effort on my behalf, I do not want to cause you any more trouble, but everything has the potential to help, it was after all Isabella's will that got me this far (plus the recollections of Lucy's daughter), what I would like especially is the mother's surname of the 1876 death (it is awkward having 3 generations all called George Stewart Hill!) and his date/place of birth.
Richard Wernham (Berkshire 18th century),
William Hissey (1805 to 1813, Hampstead Norris),
Kapirin (Siberia 19th Century),
Kitching 1850,
Mary Howse born 1806 ish,
Chris Truelove marr. John Pocock 2-7-1696, Kintbury, Berks

I have just had a reply from the Napier Cemetery

George Stuart Hill

Family Name:Hill
Given Names:George Stuart
Address:Napier
Occupation:
Age:34 years
Date Deceased:17/05/1876
 Interment Date:19/05/1876
Gender: Male
Warrant Number: 1017
Plot & Purchase Details
Cemetery:Napier Hill Cemetery
Area:1859-1895
Plot/niche No
 Section/Wall
 Page No.
 Interment No: 1
 Burial/Ashes:Buried
Depth:6FT

These details are from the Napier Courthouse Death register as the cemetery records were lost in the 1931 earthquake, they are doing an audit of the records
As there is no headstone for George Hill the plot location details  are not correct. Without a headstone it is incredibly hard to find the plot and with incorrect plot details, even harder still!

Cheers Janette

Rats...there's no mention of a middle name Bolette or otherwise in the birth register listing for the three year old Karen, daughter of a Knud ANDERSEN.

Sorry Spades. I may have sent you on a wild moose chase :-)

Mmmmwaa! (Hopefully that approximates a moose)

Yeah, I think you did. 8) I checked the passenger list of the Friedeburg but couldn't see any prospects. The bottom left corner of all the sheets are missing, probably ripped off, so some names are lost.

If you think the other shipping references you mentioned above are still worth checking I'll go back another day.
