Jennie Long Bouscaren Overton
« on: Tuesday 16 September 14 23:23 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information about what happened to Jennie Long after the death of her second husband, Clough Overton, in 1903. Clough was buried at West Point Cemetery, and I actually just called West Point to find out if she was buried there as well, and was told after a brief computer search, that no, Clough if alone.

I've searched newspapers, and the web, and haven't managed to find any information about her after 1903. If you can help me, please let me know.

I'm also curious, in case someone knows, what the circumstances of her divorce from her first husband were. In several census, he reported being a widower, instead of being divorced. That in itself was less of a surprise than the actual divorce, but what was really strange was a newspaper article in which someone accused him of kidnapping and robbery. Hmmm... it's difficult to believe a direct ancestor of mine was capable of something so sinister, but perhaps it IS an indication of something out of the ordinary.

Thank you,
Sarah

She received a pension as the widow of Clough Overton from 1903 until her death in 1914.

According to this card it looks like she moved to California in 1911 (San Francisco and Los Angeles both mentioned - think she resided in LA  but San Francisco was possibly where the pension payments were made from) and died there April 17 1914.  W. S. Bouscaren (child from first marriage?) appears to be the person who informed the pension office.

 - this may be her in 1910.

Death certificate in LA:

She was buried in Rosedale (presumably the one in LA, now Angelus Rosedale).

In terms of the divorce from her first husband, do you know about when and where it would have taken place?

Wow! Thank you so much!

I have her in Hamilton, Tennessee for the 1880 census with her husband Jules Paul Bouscaren and three children. The next place I have her is in the 1896 Washington DC city directory, listed at the same residence as two of her kids, but without Jules. Where she was in between 1880-1896 I'm not sure.

Jules "disappeared" after 1880 until 1910, when I found a listing for him in the Covington, Kentucky city directory, under Civil Engineers and Surveyors.

It's a subscription site, so I can't see the whole thing, but there are some mentions of Jules P. Bouscaren in Cincinnati newspapers from 1906-1908 here:  http://www.genealogybank.com/gbnk/newspapers/explore/USA/Ohio/Cincinnati/

In a book on Google Books called Constitution, Annual Report and List of Members By Engineers Club of Cincinnati, there's an entry that says:

Bouscaren, J.P....March 21, '07
Civil Engineer;  Residence, Columbus, Montana

I see an article about the alleged kidnapping in 1884, so I guess he hadn't disappeared then.

Mention of him in an 1890 Montana newspaper - http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/64147257/

He was listed on Google Books in the Montana Society of Engineers in 1891.

Thank you all so much!

He and at least one of his brothers (Louis Frederik Gustave Bouscaren, who was more well known at the time) worked for railroads for many years. Funny that another brother (Octave Bouscaren) hit national headlines in the 1880s for having an affair with, then marrying, the wife of a riverboat captain.

You're welcome.  This seems to place him in Rampart City, Alaska in 1898 - http://oralhistory.library.uaf.edu/78/78-12-03_AND_04_T01.pdf

The possibilities about where they might have divorced seems like a long list.
