Proof of death?

My great grandfather disappeared in about 1909 in mysterious circumstances and left his wife and two children. In 1935 his wife re-married. Would she have had to prove that her husband was dead and is there a database for such circumstances.

Sorry I am new to this and posted in the wrong section. They lived in England and not South Africa.
