northam in Yeovil
« on: Monday 29 September 14 11:48 BST (UK) »
Any help appreciated. I am trying to find out what happened to my ancestor James Northam b 1859 in Yeovil Somerset. He was the son of Isaac Northam and Ann Carter. He married Louisa Gosney b 1854 Sherborne Dorset, they married about 1880. They had children that died in infancy. I cannot find what happened to them after they married. Two of James's brothers emigrated to the United  States in 1872. Would like to find out if they followed them.
Many thanks Heather

There is this marriage reg FreeBMD
Dec qtr 1881
Sherbourne
on same page
James Northam
Louisa Gosney
5a 785

so they should be on the 1881 census as single

Do you have them in 1881?

just found that - James Northam in Sherbourne 1881

1881 census living on Long St Sherbourne is James C Chick  occ Paperhanger - Long St is the address given at Lewis George Northam's baptism

then in 1891 & 1901 Lewis George's name seems to be Chick??
1911 he is Northam and on marriage cert he is Northam

1891
Willisden london
James C Chick Head M 39 House Decorater & Paper Hanger Ross hereford
Louisa Chick wife 35 sherbourne Dorset
GEORGE CHICK son 9 Sherbourne Doret
Ada Chick daughter 11mths London
Emily L Chick 2mths Sherbourne Dorset
RG12 7044 68 4

1901
Kingsgate Rd Hampstead
James C Chick Head M 49 House decorater Ross hereford
Louisa Chick wife 45 sherbourneorset
LOUIS G CHICK son 19 Painter Sherbo Dorset
Emily C Chick daughter 12 Sherbourne Dorset

1911 Louis George is indexed as Northam

I have not found a marriage for James C Chick to Louisa - but think it may be worth further investigation

Did james Northam die -or did he go to Us leaving louisa and Louis George behind???

1911 Lewis George and his wife have surname Northam

In a later census Louisa states she married c 1887

James C Chick was married on 1881 census to Emily and living on Long St Sherbourne
Think this is his marriage
17 Feb 1876
St James Croyden Common Surrey
James Chattwick Chick 27 Bachelor Decorater address Sherbourne Dorset father James Phillip Chick
Emily Hamilton Miles 29 spinster Lower Addisent? Rd Croydon father Frederick Miles
witnesses John Thomas Chick Mary briggs all signed

then a death reg
Emily Hamilton Chick
age39
Jun qtr 1886
Sherbourne
5a 229

Louisa dates her marriage after 1886 but I haven't found one yet

The birth reg's for the children with James Chick are reg in the name of Chick

so did James Northam die pre 1887 or did he go to US leaving wife & family behind??

Perhaps James did die, but I cannot find a death for him. He could well have gone to the US, The plot thickens
Thanks
