No easy way.
You can compare names against census, to give an indicator.
Look at ukbmd to see if they have included MMN in their indexes. (Not always a go-er with common names)
Otherwise it's ask the GRO/Local register office to issue a cert.

Hi

FreeBDM is transcription of the GRO Index which up to June 1911 only included the name of child and GRO reference, after June 1911 the mothers maiden name was included so it may be possible to identify births after that date if the combination of childs surname and mothers maiden name were relatively uncommon.  Otherwise the only way to confirm parents names is to purchase the cetificate.

Just wondering if the free uk bmd index has been upgraded since the last post here in 2009?  I am trying to find the name of a person's parents in Wales.  I'm in Australia and unsure of where to look in the UK.  Is there any other free search index available?
Thanks!

Hi,

FreeBMD is update regularly but a) only covers England and Wales and b) is a volunteer site so relies on the speed of the voluntary transcribers.
Latest update was today 12th September 2014:

Thanks for your quick reply.  I've searched on the freebmd uk site but either can't or don't know how to find parents names when doing a search on someone.  In Australia, when searching the state BDM registers, either the parents full names or their Christian names is displayed on the search results for births and deaths, or the full name of the spouse is displayed for marriage search results.  Is there another official Births, Deaths and Marriages Register in the UK that is available for searches other than the freebdm?

I put in Father's Surname...Mother's maiden name without any Christian names...Place of birth......then a date range of 1911-1920...That will give you Children born to say...Father = Johnson...Mother = Atkinson between those dates.

Not fool proof but it's start.

Hi there

It depends on what sort of dates you are looking at?

Usually your best bet is to use the FreeBMD website in conjunction with the 10 yearly censuses.
If you can find a child's baptisim so much the better.Deaths include a DOB after 1969,but of course the info given at death is only as good as the informants knowledge of the deceased.

Give us some names, places, dates to work with and we'll see what we can do.
