Irland Norgrove & Ganleys
« on: Saturday 11 October 08 14:31 BST (UK) »
New to this board so please forgive me if my question on Irish connections has already been covered. We have links to Ireland via - Norgrove's in Dublin & Ganley's in Roscommon.
Alfred George Norgrove m Martha Ann Holman. A Norgrove family appears in 1911 Dublin Census but not sure of the link to our family. Thomas Ganley & sons James and Thomas plus ?? left Roscommon early 1800. We have stacks of Norgrove/Ganley in UK with a large tree in the making, but Ireland has us stumped. Would be grateful for any help/advise.

Welcome to Rootschat. Not sure exactly what sort of information you are looking for.

If you are trying to find more people in Ireland with those surnames a good place to look is IGI (International Genealogical Index) on LDS site. Put in the surname, select British Isles, Ireland and search with or without the county.
www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

If you are trying to trace your family back to their Irish origins please give us an idea of names and dates you already have but it is much harder to find pre-civil registration records in Ireland.

P.S. to avoid confusion you might want to click the 'modify' button on your 1st post and change the title to IRELAND.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you. - I have just found in one of the 'chats' Annie & Emily Norgrove, Dublin who appear to have been in City Hall in the Easter Uprising.  1911 census with parents Alfred J and Maria 15 Strandville Avenue. I would welcome any Norgrove information 1900 onwards especially involvement in the Uprising.

Hello eleanore,

Welcome to RootsChat.

A post on the Dublin board would be a good idea.

One or two Rootschatters visit the Dublin City Library and Archive in Pearse Street fairly regularly.
They might be able to check to see if the Library has any information about the Norgrove family.

BTW the well known snooker referee Len Ganley was born in Co. Armagh.

Re Len Ganley - tried contacting years ago - there was also a drummer, but he was also elusive!

Shaw's 1850 Dublin Directory lists one Ganley and two Ganlys.
